Environmental biology is the broadest of ESF's six biology majors, covering topics from molecules to ecosystems to regional landscapes. Students can choose one of the specialized areas as as an elective or minor.

The major in Environmental Biology provides students with a broad scientific background with required coursework in the biological and physical sciences as well as mathematics. The curricula is flexible accommodating student’s varied interests. This provides students the opportunity to pursue minors, certifications, research and internship opportunities, and to explore the breadth of academic opportunities in the department. As with all majors in the Department of Environmental Biology, there is an emphasis on field-based learning through six credits of field courses, three of which are earned at the Cranberry Lake Biological Station over the summer.

Environmental Biology Degree Outcomes

Given the varied pathways that students can take in this degree program, there are many career options. This may include pursuing an advanced degree in the biological sciences, in education to become a science teacher, or attending veterinary school. Students may also enter the workforce directly, employing their lab and field based skills in jobs such as field and lab technicians, research assistants, environmental educators, among many other possibilities.
