Graduate Fellowship Opportunities
The following is a short list of potential funding sources for graduate
student fellowships. It may be of use to supewrior graduate
students seeking to obtain their own support, independent of
their faculty mentor. In many cases the awards may be made to the
student prior to their selection of a graduate student program.
In all cases applications may come from students in the early phase
(typically first year except for EPA) of their program and may reflect
a specific research interest of the student.

Graduate Research Environmental Fellowships
(GREF)
Announcmements will come out in the fall
and applications come due in February
The GREF program began in June 1999 to support graduate students in the Office of Biological and Environmental Research-funded collaborative global change research at universities and national laboratories. All qualified students are encouraged to apply, but minority and female students are particularly encouraged.
The
fellowship program makes three-year appointments, renewable annually,
and pays an annual stipend of $19,200 ($1,500 monthly plus a $600
Research Education Supplement in March and October), and tuition and
fees. Graduate students selected for GREF are encouraged to participate
in the SURE 2005 orientation and research focus sessions. If you decide
to participate, GREF will pay transportation, per diem and lodging.
Applicants
must have completed their first year in graduate school, unless they
have participated previously in SURE. Applicants are required to
complete the application form, and submit a five-page description of
proposed research, letters of recommendation from the two mentors and
an outside individual, and undergraduate and graduate transcripts. The
deadline for the submission of applications will be February 7, 2005.
Announcement of fellowships awards will be made in April 2005. The
annual fellowship renewal application depends on evidence of the
Fellow’s satisfactory academic and research direction and progress.
An
important aspect of the GREF project will be the encouragement of
interdisciplinary work among colleges, universities, and national
laboratories involved in global change research efforts. Proposed
doctoral research projects that bridge the gaps between the various
GCEP programmatic research efforts will be particularly welcome. GREF
Fellows have two mentors: a university faculty advisor and a national
laboratory researcher who collaboratively guide the research
activities. Successful applicants will be asked to give a presentation
of their research efforts at a GREF workshop to be held in August 2005.

The Cornell University
Graduate School Fellowship Database primarily lists fellowships from
non-Cornell sources. Anyone interested in
consulting the database is welcome to do so. Please browse the topics in the link or type in your own keyword search ("Einstein," "Kenya," "molecular biology," "January," etc.). Further inquiries regarding fellowships listed in the database should be directed to the sponsoring organization, rather than the Cornell Graduate Fellowships office. The Fellowships office limits its responses to requests for information from prospective applicants to Cornell and from current Cornell graduate students.
