Announcement of Temporary Position at the Adirondack Ecological Center

 

Title: Biologist (Project Aide, or Senior Research Aide if full-time SUNY student)

Salary: $9 per hour Duration: May 14th - August 17th, 2007

Background: The primary purpose of the apprenticeship is to provide a meaningful professional field experience by placing a student in the role of member of the staff of the Adirondack Ecological Center. The incumbent will gain experience with field ecology, laboratory skills, computer analysis, teamwork and leadership. The typical day might include supervising a group of students in collecting data on Huntington Wildlife Forest or another study site in the Adirondacks, doing data analysis, and preparing a report. A permanent staff member of the Adirondack Ecological Center supervises the position.

Description of responsibilities: The successful candidate will work with AEC staff in conducting research in the Adirondacks. Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

ˇ Vegetation sampling
ˇ Small mammal live-trapping
ˇ Salamander population estimation
ˇ Deer population estimation
ˇ Data entry and analysis
ˇ Supervision of undergraduate students
ˇ Preparation of reports

Qualifications: Preference will be given to those students who have previously been exposed to Huntington Wildlife Forest. The successful candidate will exhibit an enthusiasm for and abilities in field biology, computer analysis, writing and teamwork. At least 3 years (approximately 90 credit-hours) completed toward a BS in biology, forestry or a related field is required. Experience in plant and animal identification, vegetation, soil, and vertebrate sampling preferred. A valid driver's license for travel in New York State is required.
