President’s Report – Joan Zelinski

·        Update on 2005 Remote Sensing Symposium:

o       Joan, Lindi and Maureren visited the facilities at Fulton Montgomery Community College (FMCC) and it seemed to be a really great place for the meeting, which is tentatively set for May 19, 2005. FMCC is close to the thruway, close to Albany, and convenient for many attendees.

o       The facilities will be at their best for the Symposium, since graduation will have just taken place a few days before.

o       There is a theatre there that can accommodate 200+ people, which will be good for the plenary or other large sessions. There is also a great GIS lab and nice classrooms we can use. These will be convenient for holding workshops. One classroom (C-110) can hold 105 people, another (C-108) can hold 50 people.

o        Some workshop ideas: an ENVI workshop (need to investigate Kodak relationships with RSI/ENVI) and a Pictometry workshop, since there are local connections to these 2 companies.  We also might consider having IAGT hold some workshops like they did during the 2003 Symposium. Also, we should investigate the possibility of doing an ASPRS technician certification training workshop, possibly the day before. Ed will look into this.

o       Space rental at FMCC is $200, but we can probably get this waived. AV use if free, of course.

o       If for some reason FMCC falls through, we canl always have it at ESF on May 19.

o       Maureen submitted a draft ESF Outreach Budget for the Symposium as an example of what kinds of fees we’d be dealing with at FMCC. She also submitted sample Specifications and a Flyer for the 2006 conference.

o       An image we might want to consider for the 2005 Symposium flyer is one that shows the Scandaga Reservoir. Joan will ask someone from FMCC to send some sample images.

o       Need to find speakers for the keynote and the plenary, and investigate if/how we pay these people. Someone from National might be good for the plenary address. Joan and Ed will investigate this.

o       We need to have further discussion on what theme we’ll have for the 2005 Symposium. Some ideas were along the lines of Remote Sensing Applications, Remote Sensing in State and Local Government.

o       In the next CNY ASPRS newsletter, we need to remind and inform people on the latest information on the 2005 Symposium.

o       We need to start contacting vendors for the event. Emily will get a list of local vendors together from last years Symposium and we can work from there (Maureen will email Emily the most recent exhibitor list). Ed can help Emily build the list.

o       Ed made a motion to consider FMCC for the 2005 Remote Sensing Symposium. Lindi seconded and all were in favor.

·        Coupons:

o       We have 5 or 6 ASPRS $5 coupons from new members joining ASPRS.  We’d like to use them towards purchase of a textbook, possibly the latest Manual of Photogrammetry textbook (5th edition) from the ASPRS store, and use it as a gift later on. Joan will mail Emily the coupons and we’ll move on from there.

National Director’s Report – Ed Freeborn

·        [JZ1] Update on Fall 2006 Specialty Conference (CNY ASPRS- potential host):

o       See Ed’s notes he provided regarding the talking points (8/29/04).

o       National seems to be leaning towards San Antonio as the venue, with the theme being a DEM conference. However, we have some good support from our Canadian partners for a Rochester conference- Geomatics has committed their support. Ed will try and investigate the status of 2006 at the ASPRS Kansas City meeting (Sept. 12-16). We might have much better chances of hosting a 2007 meeting.

·                    Endowment:

o       To set up endowments at National we need to request CNY ASPRS endowment development in a letter to National. The ASPRS Board of Directors oversees endowments. Ed will investigate the endowment development process while in Kansas City.

o       It seems to be a good idea to endow our funds because it makes them more secure, particularly at a time of economic change in CNY.

o       There was overall support for naming the Student of the Year fund in memory of Paul Hopkins, and think we’ll get more donations.

Treasurer’s Report – Emily Constantine Mercurio

·        Overview of current financial status:

o       We are in very good shape financially. Currently, we have total assets of $13,419.79. On September 9, we received a check from the SUNY Research Foundation for $1,049.78. Emily will deposit this the week of Sept. 12. When this is deposited into our checking account, we will have total assets of $14,469.57.

o       There was discussion of putting as some of our funds towards increasing the SOY award. The only concern was that we might need these funds in the next few years if we are able to host a national event in 2006 or 2007.

o       We still need to reimburse Christine Hopkins for her travel to the ASPRS Denver conference in May 2004. She hasn’t submitted any expenses to us so far, so Lindi will work with Emily to put together a check for her that will cover per diem, mileage, and transportation to/from Denver airport.

Old Business

·        CNY ASPRS Website:

o       Ron Frederiks has been very helpful in getting the site updated. We still need to update the SOY awards, event photos and minutes.

o       We decided to keep SOY winner descriptions up on the website for the past 4 years of awards.

New Business

·        Fall Technical Meeting

o       Mike Richardson (RIT Center for Imaging Science) is working with Joan to get this meeting set up. We plan to have dinner on campus. They are still working on getting a speaker, so an exact date for the meeting is not yet available. We will also do a tour of RIT.

o       We need to make sure that the next CNY ASPRS newsletter says as much as it can about the fall technical meeting, but not the date of course, if one isn’t yet available.

·        Winter Technical Meeting

o       Joan is still working on the winter technical meeting details.

Meeting adjourned 11:45 AM.
