Who are the Woodsmen?
Created in 1912, the Woodsmen Team is the oldest student organization at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY. The tradition of the team originates from old-time logging techniques, which are today practiced as a sport. We compete against other colleges six to eight times per year, traveling across the Northeast and Canada. Events include: horizontal chop, axe throw, pole climb, and cross-cut as well as many more.
The ESF Woodsmen are also active in community service efforts, mainly demonstrations, in the Syracuse area. Each year the team hosts the Annual East Coast Lumberjack Round-Up, attracting many teams from the Northeastern United States and Canada.
If you’re interested in joining the team, or just want to see what we do for yourself, practices are Mondays and Thursdays from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Lafayette Road Experiment Station. Carpooling is available and encouraged, meet at the base of Lawrinson stairs (where the field trips depart) or at Goldstein Student Center on South Campus at 6:45 p.m. for a ride! New members are always welcome. Hope to see y’all there!
