Green Infrastructure Initiative and Training Program
Monday, March 14, 2011
West Side Learning Center, Syracuse, NY
The purpose of the Green Infrastructure Initiative is to support the emergence of green infrastructure throughout Syracuse and Central New York by equipping various audiences with the knowledge and skills necessary for green infrastructure design, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance; and by educating them on local funding opportunities and current barriers to widespread acceptance of green infrastructure. Specifically, the Green Train Landscaping and Urban Ecology (GLUE) workforce training program seeks to directly prepare a cohort of Syracuse citizens with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for employment in the emerging field of green infrastructure. We are partnering with regional organizations to train un/underemployed local residents in an emerging “green” industry sector while also supporting innovative stormwater management in the Syracuse area. The training includes the development and implementation of various green infrastructure projects such as rain gardens, permeable pavers, and urban forests. These projects provide hands-on experience and skill development, while also improving and beautifying the community's infrastructure. The projects will be monitored by engineering faculty and students to investigate the effectiveness of using these practices as a practical method for stormwater management.
This training program continues through May 20, 2011.
