11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Location: Nifkin Lounge

Event Description: Join members of the ESF Planet Forward group for a live interactive webcast of a Planet Forward "salon", 3rd in the Feeding the Planet series. The Planet Forward Salon Series connects thoughtleaders, researchers, innovators and students in a focused conversation on solutions and innovations. Moderated by Planet Forward host and creator Frank Sesno, approximately 30 participants consider and discuss best practices to address food security, water, energy and climate issues.

Smart Technology for Climate-Smart Agriculture

Climatesmart agriculture (CSA) is an approach that jointly addresses the interactions between food security and climate change. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization defines CSA as having three pillars:

-- Sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and incomes (food security)
-- Adapting and building resilience to climate change (adaptation)
-- Reducing and/or removing greenhouse gas emissions, where possible (mitigation)

As governments, communities and farmers adopt CSA practices, which technologies should be scaled and integrated? This salon will identify an array of high and lowtech innovations that should be considered for climatesmart agriculture.

Key Questions:

-- Which technologies show the most promise for developing climateresilience in agriculture in the developing world? How can we scale these innovations?
-- How can domestic precision agriculture inform climatesmart agriculture in the developing world?
-- Which of these technologies and practices are (or should) be integrated in developing countries?
-- Where is the most immediate opportunity for impact Carbon reduction? Conservation?
-- How do we best communicate needs and opportunities to farmers, governments and the public?
