12:45 pm - 1:50 pm
Location: Moon Library Reading Room
Event Description: Please join SUNY-ESF’s annual celebration of Darwin-Wallace Day in Moon Library ESF’s Evolution students (EFB 311) are investigating some of the most compelling research in evolutionary biology from 2015 and 2016 and creating mini-posters to highlight that research. Given what active researchers Darwin and Wallace were, the students’ work is a fitting tribute.
Posters will be on view and accessible to the public for two weeks beginning Wednesday, February 17 in Moon Library’s Main Reading Room. During the College Hour on Wednesday, February 17, 2014, there will be cookies (!), and Moon Library will be giving away a permanent book plate in honor of the occasion. The Library also has a display of books by and about Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace.
International Darwin Day is celebrated around the world each year, around February 12 (Charles Darwin’s birthday). Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace were the first to describe biological evolution via natural selection in a scientifically rigorous way. In 1859, Darwin published On the Origin of Species. International Darwin Day celebrates this and other discoveries of Darwin. But above all, Darwin Day is a way of expressing our gratitude for the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge, acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity, has contributed to the advancement of humanity.
