Silvicultural systems for uneven-aged stands differ from even-aged in that foresters never remove all the trees during any given cutting treatment. Uneven-aged silviculture is characterized by the tending of the intermediate age classes while simultaneously regenerating replacements for the mature trees. There is a high degree of deliberateness required for planning and implementing this system, demanding thorough stand analysis and refined prescription making.
The workshop will examine approaches for using uneven-aged silviculture in northern hardwood stands. The field trip will highlight characteristics of selection system stands, and show results of applying uneven-aged silviculture in northern hardwood stands.
