Sept 6, 1902 -
June 13, 2001
"Your lasting guidance through our lives is a debt, that we, your students and colleagues, deeply appreciate. Your inspiration, contagious enthusiasm, and high professional ethics have molded us during our formative years and continue to serve as a guiding beacon" E.C. Jahn, 1971 in a tribute to his own mentor, Louis Wise but the same wordsfit the author equally well.
The chemical sciences at SUNY-ESF will miss you and seek to maintain the high standards that you established for us..

The Edwin C. Jahn Laboratory, 1997

SUNY-ESF, Syracuse, NY

The Faculty of Chemistry and the Cellulose Research Institute are saddened to announce the death (June 13, 2001) of Dr. Edwin C. Jahn for whom  our laboratory was named.  Dr. Jahn  did his B.S. (1925) and M.S. (1926) at this Institution and completed his Ph.D. in organic chemistry at McGill University, Canada in 1929. He returned to the College in 1938 as Professor of Forest Chemistry and has maintained his close involvement with us ever since.  Along the way he served as Director of Research (1949-1952), Associate Dean for Physical Sciences (1952-1966), Executive Dean of the College (1966-1967) and Dean of the College (1967-1969).  For many years  he was the Executive Secretary of the Empire State Paper Research Associates, Inc.
Wood Chemistry, an American Chemical Society Monograph (v. 97) by Dean Jahn and Louis Wise appeared in 1952 the same year in which Dean Jahn re-established the Department of Forest Chemistry at SUNY-ESF.

The following is taken  from a letter to the ESF community from our current President, Cornelius B. Murphy, Jr.

"I regret to inform you that Dr. Edwin C. Jahn died Wednesday evening. I'm sure the campus community will mourn this great individual who contributed so much to the college and to his profession.

Dean Jahn, who was 98 years old, was a 1925 cum laude graduate of ESF. He also earned his master's degree here in 1926. He returned to ESF in 1938 following study and teaching at McGill University, where he earned his doctorate, and the University of Idaho.

Many of you will remember the pioneering initiatives Dean Jahn undertook as a professor, director, associate dean and, finally, the chief executive of the college. He created our chemistry and wood products engineering faculties, the Cellulose Research Institute, the Empire State Paper Research Institute, and the Polymer Research Institute. He also raised the profile of the college's research program.

I could go on with many more of his achievements, but I think those of us who had the privilege to meet him will agree that he was a truly great man who, at heart, loved the college very much. "

Calling hours will be held at the Greenleaf Funeral Home, 503 West Onondaga Street on Tuesday, June 19 from 4 to 6 p.m.

A memorial service for Dean Jahn  will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, September 6 at ESF's Marshall Hall. Further information on this service will be provided as the date nears.
