Research by D.L. Johnson

David Johnson has a particular interest in the development of analytical techniques for the determination of the chemical and physical forms of heavy metals in soils, and atmospheric and aquatic samples. In the past, he has been instrumental in the application of automated scanning electron microscopy/image analysis techniques for individual particle analysis. The "finger printing" of particle types present in samples allows one to identify the sources of heavy metals in such materials as house dust, suspended sediments, and fugitive dusts from industrial processes. Current activities seek to combine geography with urban geochemistry (GAUGE) to study the spatial and temporal resolution needed for addressing pollution abatement and remediation of metals in urban soils, and for the creation of geography-based exposure assessments in environmental health studies. Particular emphasis is being given to the transport of outdoor soils to the indoor environment. Dr. Johnson was a member of a National Research Council study committee whose report on Superfund and Mining Megasites--Lessons from the Coeur d'Alene River Basin was released in July 2005.
