Summer Research Experience for
Undergraduates (REU) in Chemistry
This program was not funded for Summer 2008.
Finances: In addition to the stipend of $4,500,
each student will receive free housing and reimbursement
of travel expenses to Syracuse (up to about $250). Support
is also available for students to present their REU research at scientific meetings!
Who Should Apply: Sophomores and juniors with an enthusiasm for chemistry and an interest in a research career. Go HERE to apply! Students who will receive their B.S. degree in May/June 2008 are not eligible. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Note for ESF students.
Research:The
Chemistry
Department at SUNY-ESF is unique
in that is organized around interdisciplinary areas of application.
Research at ESF focuses on Environmental Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry,
Organic Natural Products Chemistry, and Biochemistry, but there are research
opportunities in Analytical Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry,
Physical Chemistry, or Theoretical Chemistry. Research in the Chemistry
Department of Le Moyne College
is slightly more traditional in orientation. Follow the links here
for more information about faculty research! Click here
to see what REU students did last year!
Professional Development : A major component of the REU experience is a program exploring careers in research , including ethics. This is taught by Chemistry faculty from ESF and Le Moyne, together with an ethics instructor from Le Moyne College.
Don't forget the FUN ! REU students will have lunch together weekly and participate in weekly outings. In addition, REU students will join faculty, staff, and graduate students in picnics, on intramural sports teams, and for other events.
Settings:
Le Moyne College is a diverse learning community that strives for academic
excellence in the Catholic and Jesuit tradition. Le Moyne College
seeks to prepare its members for leadership and service in their personal
and professional lives to promote a more just society. (excerpted from
the Mission Statement of Le Moyne College).
SUNY-ESF is the Environmental
Science and Forestry (ESF) campus of the State university of New York (SUNY)
system. ESF provides a unique setting for the study and practice
of Chemistry. The small size of ESF promotes the exchange of ideas
across disciplines and fosters a community of scholars focused on "Chemistry
with a purpose." We are very proud of our new (1997) building! Follow
the link to see what we have in the Jahn
Laboratory. In addition, the resources of a large university
are also freely available to REU students through the services of Syracuse
University, located adjacent to the ESF campus.
ESF and Le
Moyne College are located in Syracuse, NY, within an easy drive of the
Adirondacks,
the Finger Lakes, and
other prime summer vacation spots. Come join us in beautiful Upstate New
York!
Housing: Students will reside in beautiful townhouses at Le Moyne College, rather than in a dormitory. Le Moyne College is located in a residential neighborhood 4 miles from the ESF campus, and transportation to and from the ESF campus will be provided daily. Students will be able to eat in the cafeterias of Le Moyne College or Syracuse University, or prepare food in the townhouses at Le Moyne.
Dates: The program will start on Monday,
June 2 and end Thursday August 7, 2008. Follow the link for the
detailed version of the 2005 schedule.
Questions? The ESF contact person
for the program is Dr. Ted Dibble, the author of this page. The best
method for contacting me is via e-mail at chemreu[at]esf.edu. You
can also try phone 315-470-6596 and fax (315) 470-6856. The Le Moyne
contact is Dr. Joseph Mullins (315-)445-4729, mullinjj[at]lemoyne.edu).
