SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Make paper, learn about the Great Lakes, make slime, create a park, or learn how a solar boat works. These are just a few of the things you can do and learn at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry’s booth at the New York State Fair.
The college will be at the fair with different activities, exhibits and demonstrations for visitors of all ages from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the fair’s 12-day run (Aug. 26 through Sept. 6). The ESF booth is located in the New York State Parks area in front of the Horticulture Building.
ESF’s Faculty of Landscape Architecture will host an exhibit in the Horticulture Building Saturday and Sunday, August 28 and 29, highlighting the restoration of the Onondaga Creek Walk.
The schedule of events is as follows:
- Thursday, August 26 & Friday, August 27 — From Molecules to Ecosystems
Explore wildlife biology, invertebrate zoology, fisheries and aquatic systems, biogeochemistry, restoration of rare species and more with ESF’s Faculty of Environmental and Forest Biology. - Saturday, August 28 & Sunday, August 29 — Solar Boating
See the solar-powered boat made by SUNY-ESF engineering students and taken to a national competition. Learn about the boat and the competition from the Faculty of Environmental Resources and Forest Engineering. - Monday, August 30 — A Day at the Lakes
Explore New York’s Great Lakes, their coastlines and watersheds with ESF’s Great Lakes Consortium. Correctly guess the number of zebra mussels in a jar and win a prize. Great Lakes atlases will be given away throughout the day. - Tuesday, August 31 — Biomass: Energy for the Future
Learn about ESF’s exciting research to develop willow biomass to provide a clean, efficient energy source for the future. - Wednesday, September 1 — Life from the Forest
Learn about trees commonly found in New York State and about the Forest and Natural Resources Management program at ESF. More than 800 seedlings will be given away throughout the day. - Thursday, September 2 — Chemistry for the Community
The Faculty of Chemistry will be on hand to demonstrate biodegradable plastics and lead testing in soils. Activities for kids include making “slime” and liquid nitrogen ice cream. - Friday, September 3 & Saturday, September 4 — Make Your Own Paper
Learn how to make hand-made paper with ESF’s Faculty of Paper Science and Engineering. - Sunday, September 5 & Monday, September 6 — ESF Carnival
Take a break from the hubbub of the fair and play some environmentally themed games with the kids.
On August 28 and 29 be sure to stop by the Horticulture Building to see ESF’s Faculty of Landscape Architecture’s display on the restoration of the Onondaga Creek Walk.
