A $100,000 endowed scholarship was created by a donation from Dr. Patrick (Paddy) Dorr, in coordination with the Syracuse Garden Club (SGC), in 2010 after the passing of his wife, Nan. The scholarship is specifically to support ESF Landscape Architecture students and provides an opportunity for the student receiving the scholarship to work together with SGC in a meaningful way in the community.
Nan was very active with the Syracuse Garden Club, and the family wanted to honor that legacy and support students at SUNY-ESF. Recalling the prior work by both organizations, Dr. Dorr said ESF and SGC are a perfect match.
The garden club is involved in numerous projects, including planting endcaps on Meadowbrook Drive in Syracuse, maintaining the Dark Aisle at Lorenzo State Historic Site in Cazenovia since 1976, and providing tens of thousands of daffodils that have been planted at the Route 481/Route 5 cloverleaf in DeWitt.
“The Dorrs’ generosity to include the Syracuse Garden Club was remarkable and keeps Nan’s spirit alive for us,” said SGC president Carol Porter.
