Earth Week 2012 will go down as one of the best in memory, with 50 scheduled events and wonderful weather throughout. Thanks to all who made it great.

    Hike for Honduras Part II for Peru
    SUNDAY, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm.

    Come join us in beautiful Amberations for our Earth Week Hike for Honduras Part II for Peru. The event will take place at the park, Amberations in Marietta, NY. Transportation and LUNCH (meat and veggies for everyone!) will be provided. We ask hike participants to help us fundraise in our effort to provide potable water to a rural, mountain village of 300 residents in Buena Vista, Honduras and starting projects involving water filters in rural Peru. All donations are greatly appreciated, for more information on our projects or donations visit our website. Transportation for ESF student will be provided.     Yoga on the Quad

    Hula Hoop

    Take a break during your busy day and relax out on the quad hula hooping with Sterling Rung! Make your own hula hoop out of PVC and decorate to your liking, followed by tutorials on neat hula hooping tricks! ESF Quad, Rain Location: Marshall Foyer

    Zero-Gravity Gong Chair Demonstration

    Join The Conduit on their mission to 'Gong the Planet'. While sitting in the Zero-Gravity Gong Chair, one is taken on a unique sound journey experience.     Time Capsule Presentation and Sealing

    Cross-disciplinary Seminar in Hydrological and Biogeochemical Processes /Women in Scientific and Environmental Professions Speaker Series

    Dr. Lilian Na'ia Alessa, "Water, Technology and Sustainability: Are we engineering vulnerability?" Dr Alessa is Professor of Biology and Director, Resilience and Adaptive Management Group, University of Alaska Anchorage. She holds a Ph.D. in cell biology from the University of British Columbia and has extensive training in cognitive psychology. These greatly inform her current approaches to social ecological complexity and research on human adaptation to climate change. Alumni (Nifkin) Lounge

    Forum on Indigenous Issues and the Environment
    11:40 am - 1:00 pm.

    EFB 305 will present their research on several case studies regarding indigenous environmental issues--including: 1.The Onondaga Land Rights Action and the state of Onondaga Lake 2.Hydrofracking 3.Tar sands extraction and oil pipelines occurring on indigenous territories, and more.     Recycled crafts with young children at the Wilson Park Community Center
    4:00 pm - 6:00 pm.

    Come and join us to help young children from neighboring Syracuse community schools make crafts out of recycled materials. We will be traveling to the Wilson Park Community Center at 4:00 pm and giving a brief lesson about recycling, and how to make the crafts. Transportation will be provided,leaving from the parking lot behind Baker Laboratory at 3:30pm.     Haudenosaunee Social Dance on the Quad

    AXS Speaker Series
    6:30 pm - 7:30 pm.

    Join Alpha Xi Sigma (AXS) for an engaging presentation by Robert Hargrove. Mr. Hargrove has worked with the EPA as Director of the NEPA Compliance Division, graduated from SUNY-ESF, and is now an instructor at Duke University. Passed in 1969, NEPA, or the National Environmental Policy Act, assures all branches of government give proper consideration to the environment prior to undertaking any major federal action that could significantly affect the environment. 146 Baker

    The Effect of Agrotransformation on Elephants and Tigers in Malaysia
    3:30 pm - 5:00 pm.

    Don Moore, the Associate Director of Animal Care at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC will be coming to Marshall Auditorium on Thursday afternoon to give a talk about the effect of Agrotransformation on Elephants and Tigers in Malaysia. Don is an ESF alumni and a great speaker. His talk will cover the human-animal conflict efforts that the Smithsonian Institute and the National Zoo are currently involved in with the Malaysian government and what to do with the wildlife at the new oil palm "forest" edge. Don and his team are studying Asian elephant ecology and human-elephant conflict in range countries, cognition in range countries and in US zoos, and reproductive sciences around the world, while the National Zoo's vet teams are studying diseases and chemical management.     2nd Annual Quadstock
    7:00 pm - 11:00 pm.

    Join Alpha Xi Sigma (AXS) and the Earth Week Committee for Quadstock, a showcase of ESF's diverse talent. This year's theme is, 'Music Can Change the World.' There will be free food, non-stop entertainment, and marshmallow roasting under the stars. AXS will also be raising money for Spay and Neuter Syracuse through voluntary donations and raffles.     ESF Olympics and Ultimate Frisbee Tournament
    11:00 am - 4:00 pm.

    Get ready for a little competition. Participate in three-legged races, water balloon tosses, sack races, tug-a-war, and other fun activities. Be sure to stick around and join us for an Ultimate Frisbee tournament beginning at 12:30pm. Sign up in teams of six for the Frisbee tournament on Facebook and be sure to include a team name! ESF Quad, Weather permitted

    How it's Made - Paper!!
    12:30 pm - 3:00 pm.

    Tours will be given from 12:30 pm to 3 pm to show off how paper is made. The paper machine run that will be taking place during the tours is part of the paper engineering students' senior project. The tours will give participants a close-up view of what it takes to make the vast array of paper products we use everyday plus knowledge of what all that big machinery in the basement of Walters Hall is for. Tours will begin every half hour and begin at the Robin Hood Oak. Please contact Joseph Piazza at jpiazza@syr.edu to sign up for a tour. Free t-shirts will be given to the first 35 people who sign-up. Sign-ups will also be available at Papyrus Club's table during the Earth Week activities fair on Monday April 16.     Recycled Crafts and Workshops
    1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

    Stop on by Moon for recycled crafts including: making a grow-your-own mushroom kit, planting seeds in recycled containers, crocheting/knitting with plastic bags, participating in a T-shirt Re-purposing workshop put on by Maura Stefl from the Outreach Office-Be sure to bring your own t-shirt to re-purpose!     ESF Photo on the Quad and Tie-Dye Competition
    2:00 pm.

    Wear your tie-dye and join your fellow students to spell out 'ESF' on the quad. The photo will be taken at 2:00 PM. Before the photo at 1:45, two winners will be selected - one for the most creative object tie-dyed, and the other for the best tie-dye shirt design. Tie-dye must be homemade, not store bought. Winners will receive a customized Earth Week Prize. ESF Quad

    Primitive Pursuits Meeting
    4:00 pm - 12:00 am.

    Earth Week Student Showcase
    7:00 pm - 11:00 pm.

    Students will volunteer their artwork to be auctioned off, all of the proceeds going to the organization Invisible Children. Movie will be shown about IC, and the Vanderbuilts will be playing later on. Nifkin Lounge

    Campus Day of Service
    10:00 am - 3:00 pm.

    ESF's Campus Day of Service sends students out into the Syracuse community and beyond to perform tasks that organizations cannot accomplish without our help. This spring, the Campus Day of Service gets volunteers involved in six projects that range from helping out an animal clinic, assisting with the outdoor maintenance at a pre-school, to preparing community gardens for the growing season. This event is rain or shine! Sign up on the link provided using your name and e-mail address (no need to create an account). Meet in Moon Library at 10:00am for a continental breakfast.     Spring Banquet 2012

This engaging documentary, Earth Days, shares many extraordinary stories from the era's pioneers such as Apollo Nine astronaut Rusty Schweickart and renewable energy pioneer Hunter Lovins.
