Students enrolled in Senior Synthesis in Conservation Biology will present the results of their semester-long project that focused on the conservation of a 175-acre forest in Manlius. This forest, known locally as Three Falls Woods due to the presence of three seasonally-flowing waterfalls, is currently threatened by development. Working in support of a local grassroots organization, the class compiled comprehensive information about the site and developed recommendations for protecting and managing the area in the future. The meeting was inspired by talks among members campus organizations and students wanting more engagement with the community. Our intent is to create stronger links for faculty between outreach and teaching/research, streamline and focus our efforts to the benefit of the community, and give students service learning opportunities backed by faculty participation. Participants will learn what community groups are doing, what they would like to do, and how the university might support their efforts. Milton J. Adopt-a-Stream
Stream surveys and clean-ups at various sites. Participants will survey the chemistry, macroinvertebrates, botany and physical stream measurements for Butternut Creek, Meadowbrook Creek and Chittenango Creek. The public is invited to join us and will be actively engaged in the science activities included in the event. Meadow Brook and Butternut Creek Sites.
