This is a general course intended to introduce students to the major topics and concepts of Plant Physiology. The course is split into three sections covering Plant Biochemistry and Metabolism, Water and Solute Transport, and Plant Growth and Development. As a 500-level course, EFB530 is open to both advanced undergraduates and graduate students. The prerequisite coursework is EFB325 Cell Physiology (or equivalent) and at least one semester of organic chemistry. Previous coursework in Botany or Plant Science will be very beneficial. There is a corresponding laboratory course EFB531 Plant Physiology Lab (2 credits), which may be taken concurrently.

On an accompanying web page is the syllabus for the Plant Physiology lecture course. Lectures are Mon, Wed, Fri from 12:50-1:45 in 145 Baker Lab. We will be using the text Plant Physiology (4th edition), by Taiz and Zeiger, which is available in Follett's Orange Bookstore and the SU bookstore. Several additional texts are on reserve in Moon Library, when additional sources of information are needed. They are listed below.

Use of the internet is required for this course. The outlines that I use for each lecture are accessible from this site. Please note that I may be revising each outline up until the day of that lecture. Last year's exams are also accessible from this site. The textbook has an accompanying web site at http://4e.plantphys.net/. Chapters 2 and 14 in the text are only available at this web site. There is also a great deal of supporting information, including topical essays and challenge questions, which will be assigned through the course of the semester. The use of e-mail is required for this course. I will send e-mails to you at your 'syr.edu' address. If your SU account is not your primary e-mail account, please make sure that you have set your e-mail to be automatically forwarded to the one you do check on a daily basis. You can do that on the web at: http://its.syr.edu/email/aliasing/ I will send an e-mail during the first week of class. Please reply as soon as you receive it, so I can be sure my e-mail got to you.

Grades will be assigned based on your score out of 400 total possible points, as follows:

Two midterms (100 points each) = 200 points

Final exam (150 points) = 150 points

Five paper summaries (10 pts. each) = 50 points

When you are struggling. . . (having difficulties, missing classes, personal or family problems)

As noted in the ESF Student Handbook, there are offices at both ESF and SU available to provide academic support, as well as career and personal counseling. The ESF Office of Career and Counseling Services, 110 Bray Hall, 470-6660, can direct you to the proper source of help. Confidentiality is assured. If you experience family or health emergencies that will interfere with your ability to succeed in this or other courses, see, call, or e-mail Tom Slocum (toslocum@esf.edu) at the ESF Office of Career and Counseling Services. He can give official endorsement to your need for accommodation. His office will also contact all of your class instructors for you, should such an emergency require you to be absent from campus.
