I have written two books, both published by Harvard University Press, and both shepherded to publication by my incomparable editor, Ann Downer-Hazell.

The Extended Organism. The Physiology of Animal-Built Structures was first published in 2000, with a paperback edition issued in 2004. In 2007, a Japanese language edition of The Extended Organism will be issued by Misuzu Shobo. The Extended Organism takes off from Richard Dawkin's luminous book, The Extended Phenotype, but my peculiar physiological take on the subject leads me to some significant differences with Dawkins' original concept. You can read more about it here.

The Tinkerer's Accomplice. How Design Emerges from Life Itself will be published in Fall 2006. It is a book about design, the harmonious melding of structure and function that makes for a well-adapted organism. It is not about intelligent design, although I do start with the idea that design is a real problem in biology that Neodarwinism has not explained as well as everyone thinks. You can read more about The Tinkerer's Accomplice here.
