Personal Statement
I'm interested in urban forestry from an ecosystem services perspective and urban sustainability in general. I work with the iTree set of tools to quantify urban forest structure and ecosystem services. I’m also interested in ecological sanitation, the conversion of wastes into resources (integrated ecological waste management), citizen science, and permaculture. I’m a very idealistic person but am grounded in data and science. I see a huge need for scientists to actively participate in movements for social change (in addition to the need to communicate science to the public). The intersection of science and activism is fascinating to me, but is sometimes very frustrating.

Graduate Research Topic
My primary research focuses on urban forest ecosystem service optimization, tradeoffs, and disparities. I'm creating a decision support tool that will help stakeholders determine where to plant and protect trees to best obtain desired ecosystem services while shedding light on costs, tradeoffs, and environmental justice. My work involves spatially explicit modeling, quantifying metrics of inequality, and valuing ecosystem services. It builds on the iTree set of tools (www.itreetools.org). Initial ecosystem services included in the analysis are the reduction of air pollution (via dry deposition of PM2.5 and stomatal uptake of ozone by leaves), reduction of the urban heat island (shading and evapotranspiration), and infiltrating stormwater (supporting municipal green infrastructure goals).

"A human being is a part of a whole, called by us _universe_, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." -Albert Einstein

I am currently assessing the practicality of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) for evaluating short and long term changes in stream morphology and sediment loads. I am comparing TLS data collected in Oneida Creek and in McKinley Hollow (Catskill Mountains, New York) to LiDAR data as well as orthoimagery and digitized historical aerial imagery dating back as far as the 1930s.

Quote on Graduate Experience
"My experience as a graduate student at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry has been tremendously positive. The faculty, including Professor James M. Hassett, have always been exceptionally enthusiastic and supportive of my goal to explore a cross-disciplinary approach to human brain mapping as it relates to neurosurgical diagnostics and intervention. My affiliation and current program of study with SUNY ESF has always been a source of pride to me, and I am looking forward to the fact that my graduate education is not only preparing me to investigate the physical topography of the earth on which we live, but to also go spelunking into the depths of the human brain. The faculty in the mapping sciences program at SUNY ESF have not only made this possible, but have done so with sincere enthusiasm."

Undergraduate Institute: Green Mountain College (Biology)

Personal Statement
I like to grow plants, but a sense of wonder is the most beautiful thing to cultivate. At this time, I'm focused on the human relationship with ecological sustainability I would like to integrate my three interests - biomimicry, ecological design, and phytotechnology - into a study of ecological engineering so that I may better understand how to design, implement, and manage systems and technologies that ameliorate human impacts on natural resources.

Graduate Research Topic
The optimization of thermal and water fluxes on green roof microcosms with native plant species.

“Water does not resist. Water flows. When you plunge your hand into it, all you feel is a caress. Water is not a solid wall, it will not stop you. But water always goes where it wants to go, and nothing in the end can stand against it. Water is patient. Dripping water wears away a stone. Remember that, my child. Remember you are half water. If you can't go through an obstacle, go around it. Water does.” ― Margaret Atwood
