My teaching most closely follows the writings of Paolo Freire, a Brazilian educator who developed Engaged Pedagogy:
Teachers are facilitators, not authority figures Students are learners who already have real-life experiences Knowledge is something that is negotiated, contextual, and claimed, not deposited in the head.
With this in mind I involve students in exercises that encourage independent, creative thought. As a teacher, my goal is to get the students to “do” rather than simply absorb. In my classes I also want students to think beyond the theoretical to real-life applications. How will they come to use this in the real world?
Courses I’m teaching:
Fall ERE 596: Designing for Sustainability. I co-teach this course with Tim Toland and Robin Hoffman in Landscape Architecture (LSA 496: Aesthetics and Sustainable Design)
Spring ERE 296: Introduction to Ecological Engineering
I’m also currently developing an advanced design course on ecosystem restoration.
