As assigned by Sean Murphy, the entire MPO region was examined for missing roads in the roads shapefile and these missing roads were digitized in a working coverage to be later joined to the basic roads files. The road editing procedure was as follows.
The standard MPO roads file was copied into the Bunny folder on the Y drive and labeled “working_mpo_roads.” The catalog of 2003 orthorectified one-foot color aerials was used as a reference base within the extent of Syracuse. For the rest of the MPO, the catalog of 2003 two-foot infrared orthophotos was used. The original mpo_roads file was used as a reference of existent digitized roads. All editing was performed on working_mpo_roads.
Each orthophoto within the catalog, overlaid with the mpo_roads layer, was visually examined for roads that had not yet been digitized. When such roads were located, they were digitized at a scale denominator of approximately 3000. Attributes were assigned to newly digitized roads in the following fields: NAME, NEW_UNQ, MUNI, FLAG, CATEGORY, FUN_CLASS, OWNERSHIP, COUNTY, Z990_UR, Z000_UR, CNG, U_FC, E_FC, and C_FC.
These digitized roads were compared to the Mapworks’s Syracuse Atlas, 3rd edition, printed in 2000, from which attributes were derived. Because the atlas is three years older than the orthophotos, some roads were digitized that could not be named. These roads were labeled “TBA.” New roads were flagged “NEW2005.” Any other attributes were assigned according to my best judgment, with Sean consulted about areas of uncertainty.
Problems with the existent roads file were noted and brought to Sean’s attention. Some problems were flagged “CHECK ME” or “MOD2005”; these records should be ignored when joining the new edits to the previous file.
I may be contacted if there is any need for clarification.
