A Novel Process for Biological Nitrogen Removal from Dairy Wastewater in Constructed Wetlands

Funded by:

U.S. EPA P3 Program: A National Student Design Competition for Sustainability Focusing on People, Prosperity, and the Planet. http://es.epa.gov/ncer/p3/

Pre-Award activities:

The ERE 596-02 Ecological Engineering for Waste Management and FEG 275 Ecological Engineering I classes built, operated, monitored, and analyzed four wetland treatment systems in ESF Old Greenhouse during the spring 2008 semester.

  • Milking house washwater was simulated and treated initially in four treatment trains. High bacterial activity was demonstrated, but odorous issue stopped this test.

  • Ammonium-rich dairy wastewater was synthesized and treated by partial nitrification, anammox and denitrification. The effects of vegetation, limestone addition, and aeration were examined in paralell systems. Students also observed the development of invertebrates and vertebrates.

  • A graduate student transferred the gravel biofilm from clear bins in the Old Greenhouse to blue bins in Marshall B8 lab. Three batch biofilters have been operated to enrich anammox bacteria and monitored since June 30, 2008. The effects of dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, and trace elements are being tested.

Project progress:

An ESF P3 Team has been operating two baffled biofilters for enrichment of anammox bacteria since August 30, 2008. The biofilters will provide anammox bacteria for seeding wetland treatment systems which are designed to incorporate partial nitrification and anammox for nitrogen removal.

  • Initial setup and seeding were completed on August 30, 2008 in Ecological Engineering Lab at 108 Baker.

  • Students have analyzed the grain size distribution and specific surface areas of the marble chips packed in the biofilters.

  • Students are tracking biomass development and treatment performance.
