ADAPTIVE MANAGEMENT TERM PAPERS   FALL 2007

PAPER #1: Literature Review of an AM Topic     Due Wed 10/24

            AM is a hybrid field, aiming to integrate diverse concepts from both natural sciences and policy arenas. The first portion of the course attempts to provide an historical context- why has AM emerged in recent years, and a basic intro to AM’s components and challenges. Necessarily, the selected readings and class discussions can only touch the tip of multiple foundational icebergs.

            Paper #1 provides each student the opportunity to take one important

AM topic of their choice, (e.g. indicators, bureaucratic networks, monitoring….), review and summarize additional key literature, and share this with the class. Over time these topic analyses will constitute a student- accessible second/deeper iceberg layer.

            The paper will be approximately 10-12 pages, including:

                        An introduction that situates the topic within the broader concept of AM;

                        Bibliographic Essay that integrates and summarizes the selected resources;

                        Glossary of course terms used; and a

                        Bibliography

PAPER #2: MINI AM CASE STUDY        Due last class Wed. Dec. 5

            Much (most?) of the literature regarding AM involves Case Studies. This is understandable based on the “genius loci” of the physical and institutional contexts, and the essentially ad-hoc way in which AM is selected by diverse actors in environmental controversies as a possible means to a sustainable resolution.

            1. Students will select a controversial environmental decision making case: either current or recent past; either one that explicitly calls itself “AM”, or one that doesn’t. It’s OK to pick a case that has been discussed in our readings.

            2. The student will need access to some case documents (reports, impact statements..). It is not sufficient to solely use secondary references- what others (authors, journalists, academics..) have written, although these should be included where available;

            3. There is not time to attempt developing new data from interviews, surveys….(this is not a thesis);

            4. The paper will be approx. 15-20 pages, including:

                        Introduction to the AM analysis framework that will be used (note: you don’t have to follow his exact schema, but Lee provides an example of this),

                        Actor-Stakeholder diagram using course format

                        AM topic by AM topic analysis with references to your sources;

                        Tabulated summary of the analysis (Lee is also a potential model);

                        Conclusions: such as this was/was not/ was partially AM;

                                                               this was/was not/ was partially environmentally  successful;

                                                               any recommendations;

                        Glossary of course terms used;

                        Bibliography of sources
