“Survivor Business: It Ain’t No Reality Show – Adapting Small Business to Market Changes”

I. Holly Rosenthal has nearly 30 years experience in the area of design, development and construction. Upon graduation from SUNY ESF, she worked with two international consulting firms in Texas before returning to assist the family business with “just one project”……in 1985.

For over 90 years Rosenthal Chadwick and Rosenthal Residential have provided heating, ventilation, air conditioning, indoor air quality and energy conservation solutions for homes, business and industry. The companies enjoy a reputation for being technically progressive and resourceful and have successfully completed projects for The Pyramid Companies and many local institutions including ESF, Syracuse University, as well as work on the Alliance Bank Stadium.

Ms. Rosenthal is a founding member of the New York Indoor Environmental Quality Center (NYIEQ) and serves on its Board and the Advisory Board of the soon to be constructed Center of Excellence for Environmental and Energy Systems. Ms. Rosenthal was the first woman to be licensed as an HVAC contractor by the City of Syracuse. She was an honoree for the Girls, Inc. Spirit of American Woman Award and was honored in the first “class” of Syracuse’s 40-Under-40. In 1994 she was named the New York State Woman of Achievement in Business. She is a graduate of Leadership Greater Syracuse and served on its Policy Planning Council, as well as the Board of the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce.

"Tale of a Start-up: SmartScience Inc."

The 2nd Entrepreneurship Seminar in the Fall 2005 series will be of special interest to ESF students, faculty and staff since it will illustrate how environmentally friendly, "green" technologies can be leveraged into unique business opportunities. Refreshments will be served!

Richard D. Kampas, Senior Vice President of Communications, and a Co-Founder of SmartScience Inc. will speak about the challenges and rewards of starting this company from scratch.

The firm was founded in July 2004 and acquires and licenses ready-to-market nontoxic and organic products which fight plant diseases and agricultural pests. SmartScience matches tested, proven and reliable environmentally-friendly products with industry-specific and mass-market distribution channels, serving a growing commercial and consumer audience nationwide and beyond.

Mr. Kampas works at the Company's headquarters located in the Syracuse Technology Garden. He was formerly president and owner of Photomedia Inc. for over 25 years, a marketing and business development firm located in a 16,000 square foot facility in Syracuse. Before founding Photomedia in 1977, Mr. Kampas was a photographer and multi-media producer for the State University of New York and an Industrial Photographer for General Electric. He holds a BS degree in Industrial Technology and Communications from SUNY Oswego.
