What Species Is Most Fit for Life? All Have an Equal Chance, Scientists Say

There are more than 8 million species of living things on Earth, but none of them - from 100-foot blue whales to microscopic bacteria - has an advantage over the others in the universal struggle for existence. In a paper published today (Jan. 8) in the prestigious journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, a trio of scientists including Dr. Charles A.S. Hall of ESF, describe the dynamic that began with the origin of life on Earth 4 billion years ago. (1/8)

The Ocean Is Losing Its Breath

In the past 50 years, the amount of water in the open ocean with zero oxygen has gone up more than fourfold. In coastal water bodies, including estuaries and seas, low-oxygen sites have increased more than 10-fold since 1950. Scientists expect oxygen to continue dropping even outside these zones as Earth warms. To halt the decline, the world needs to rein in both climate change and nutrient pollution, an international team of scientists asserted in a new paper published inScience. One of the team members is Karin Limburg, a fisheries ecologist at ESF. (1/4)

Hurricanes Hit, so Ph.D. Candidate Gets to Work in Puerto Rico

Ph.D. candidate Braulio "Bali" Quintero was working in his native Puerto Rico this past summer when he prepared to fly back to Syracuse in September to defend his dissertation at ESF. Then Hurricane Irma slammed the Caribbean and southern Florida, knocking out power, flight schedules and Quintero's plans. So he rescheduled his flight for Sept. 20 - the day Hurricane Maria crashed into Puerto Rico. Instead of flying back to the Northeast, he hunkered down and listened to the wind howl for 16 hours. When he was able to emerge, Quintero got to work. (12/15)
