General Description of Course
The course is designed primarily for graduate students and upper division undergrad students who have taken introductory GIS courses here and will cover methods and techniques found in study areas pertinent to Natural Resources analysis and management.. The software will be ArcGIS v10 Service Pack 3. The course will focus on the application of GIS techniques to real problems.
We will insist that students use the Modelbuilder after week 7 for all exercises. Using the Modelbuilder is the best way to keep track of what you are doing while at the same time producing a graphic of the processing used (workflow). Major topics to be covered include Introduction to ArcMap 10, Geoprocessing, Python scripting, Modelbuilder, and other topics suggested by the class such as Spatial Analyst, 3-D Analysis, Network Analyst, etc.
The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6:30 in ESFs computer cluster in 310 Baker Lab. Each class will be a combination of lecture, demonstration, discussion, tutorials, and lab exercises. There will be a heay emphasis on computer use because to become "expert" requires Practice, Pracice, and more Practice.
