Saving African Great Apes

Infectious disease has joined poaching and habitat loss as a major threat to the survival of African great apes as they have become restricted to ever-smaller populations. Based on their findings, Sadie Ryan (ESF) and Peter Walsh (Cambridge) suggest that the great ape conservation community pursue and promote treatment and vaccination as weapons in the arsenal for fighting the decline of African apes. Two ESF Students Represent Youth at United Nations

ESF Scientists Battle Fly That Threatens Darwin’s Finches

ESF researchers are traveling to the Galapagos Islands to search for ways to combat a non-native, invasive fly that is threatening native birds, including mangrove finches, one of the species studied by Charles Darwin. (1/27)

Wood Use Mitigates Climate Change

NOAA Grant Focuses on Battling Toxins in Great Lakes

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded a team of scientists, including ESF's Dr. Gregory Boyer, $182,982 for the first year of an anticipated four-year $703,777 project for research that could lead to a biofilter that could break down harmful algal toxins in the Great Lakes into harmless byproducts. ESF Graduate Student Helps Give Dogs a Second Chance

Stephanie Figary, an environmental and forest biology graduate student at ESF, has launched the Paws In Motion program, which connects student runners with energtic dogs at a local animal shelter. The program has grown from ten people when it began in April to more than 40 people. (10/14)

2011 State Fair Butter Sculpture Unveiled

Created from 800 pounds of unsalted butter, the sculpture is called "Feeding our Future" and depicts students in a school cafeteria line. When the Fair is over, the sculpture will be broken down, brought to ESF and converted into biodiesel fuel for use in college vehicles. (8/25)

Hexavalent Chromium Found in Syracuse Water

The Environmental Working Group released findings from a survey of municipal water supplies and listed Syracuse as one of 31 cities where the study found hexavalent chromium or chromium 6 in the water. Chromium 6 can be linked to stomach cancer in humans.

Dr. John Hassett, professor of chemistry at SUNY-ESF, told WSYR TV reporter Jan Carabeo, "We certainly shouldn't overreact because we have very high quality drinking water in Central New York." (12/22)

U.S. Study of Research Universities Gets Under Way

September launched a new federal panel designed to recommend how to ensure that American research universities remain vital and effective. The Committee on Research Universities, sponsored by the National Academies and funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, includes corporate CEOs, university leaders, and others, and is charged with answering this question: "What are the top ten actions that Congress, the federal government, state governments, research universities, and others could take to assure the ability of the American research university to maintain the excellence in research and doctoral education needed to help the United States compete, prosper, and achieve national goals for health, energy, the environment, and security in the global community of the 21st century?" A report is due next May.

ESF Convocation Stresses a Green Future

Three hundred and thirty nine diplomas were awarded Saturday, May 15, at Syracuse's John H. Mulroy Civic Center at the 2010 Convocation of the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Spring Break 2010

Twenty-six ESF students went to New Orleans over spring break but they only spent a day or so touring The Big Easy. The rest of the week they worked building and repairing homes devastated by Hurricane Katrina in St. Bernard Parish. They also planted trees and helped clean up a couple of neighborhoods (4/27)

GCI Finalist in “Green of the Crop” Contest

The Green Campus Initiative, a student organization dedicated to making ESF a greener and more sustainable institution, was named first runner-up in the inaugural "Green of the Crop" contest sponsored by The Amos Project, Clean Tech Center, CNY Works, Earthsense, MDA, New York's Creative Core, Syracuse Center of Excellence, and The Post Standard/Green CNY. ESF Students Go Back To 5th Grade

The Student Environmental Action Coalition at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) began work at Fraser School in the Syracuse City School District on Friday, April 9th, and will return the next two Fridays to help the fifth-grade students clean up the area around the school, learn about recycling, start flower seeds in their classrooms and finally transplant those flowers to the school grounds. New Shrub Willow Planting for Renewable Energy Project

At a press conference on the campus of SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), Eric Spomer, president of Catalyst Renewables, announced plans to plant 200 additional acres of purpose-grown willow crops on leased farmland in Cayuga, St. Lawrence, and Erie Counties. The company had previously planted 600 acres of willow on land leased from farmers in Oneida, Lewis, Cayuga, and Livingston counties. (3/22)

Weather Stations on the Quad

Weather stations that were lined up across the ESF Quad in mid-March are being prepared for use in a study that will send College and U.S. Forest Service scientists out to research the effect of tree cover on microclimates, especially temperature. (3/22)

ESF Co-sponsors 'Onondaga Land Rights' Series

ESF will help lead the educational series "Onondaga Land Rights & Our Common Future II." The series aims to bring together the ESF and Central New York communities, including Syracuse University, Le Moyne College, SUNY Empire State College and other organizations, to talk about culture and land rights. The Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation created the series to promote education and respect, dispel racism and improve relations between the U.S. and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. (2/4)

Ten ESF students and one faculty member spent a week of the 2009-2010 winter break in New Orleans. Yes, they did do a little sightseeing but most of the week was devoted to helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina put their lives and neighborhoods back together. (2/1)

Syracuse Mayor Delivers State of the City Address at ESF

Mayor Stephanie Miner gave her first state of the city address Thursday night to a packed Marshall Auditorium at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Huntington Lodge Restoration Gets High Marks

The entry of the 1911 lodge brings guests into a foyer that features a reconstructed, historic fireplace and a staircase reflective of vintage Durant architecture. The foyer opens onto a formal dining room. New floor-to-ceiling windows draw in the late afternoon sunlight. A painting of Wolf Lake Cabin done by the late Justus Mueller, who taught at ESF during the 1930s and '40s, and restored by West Lake Conservators of Skaneateles, has been placed over the dining room fireplace. ESF, OCC And Syracuse Schools Win Grant

Dr, Richard Beal, Associate Director for ESF Educational Outreach, spoke at the news conference Friday, December 18, 2009 where details were released about the "Smart Scholars" program. Record-setting Helicopter Pilot Honored by SUNY-ESF

The award dinner focused on the need to recognize the role of innovative transportation in sustainable communities. Honoree Scott Kasprowicz, who recently served as deputy secretary of transportation for the Commonwealth of Virginia. called for individuals to take responsibility for helping to solve the problem of getting people where they need to be. U.S. Secretary of Energy Visits ESF

Visiting with the energy secretary, Congressman Daniel B. Maffei (NY-25) Maffei announced that the city of Syracuse will receive $1,444,500 in Recovery Act EECBG funds to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lowering the city's energy costs, while creating local green jobs. Test Run For New Fueling Station

SUNY-ESF Sets Plan for Carbon-Neutral Campus by 2015

The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) has developed a Climate Action Plan that will use a combination of renewable energy projects, sustainable construction, energy conservation and managed forestland to make the college carbon neutral by 2015.

ESF took the unusual step of involving students in the formulation of the plan, which was to be submitted Sept. 15 to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education as part of the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). (9/11)

Smardon Appointed Great Lakes Basin Advisory Council Chair

Dr. Richard C. Smardon, ESF professor of environmental studies, has been appointed chair of the New York State Great Lakes Basin Advisory Council by Gov. David Paterson. The council advises the governor and legislature on Great Lakes Policy issues. Smardon has been a member of the council since 1989 as a governor's appointment for research. (8/14)

SUNY-ESF Builds Wind Turbine Power Generator

The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) today began testing a new "homeowner-sized" wind turbine to power its remote classrooms at Heiberg Forest in Tully, N.Y. As part of ESF's commitment to service learning, a group of students analyzed various locations for a wind turbine and their work helped locate the turbine at Heiberg. Another student worked to assemble and erect the wind turbine. Once testing is complete, the new ESF wind turbine will be tied in to National Grid and begin producing electrical power. (7/21)

New Threat to New York Trees

Emerald ash borer was recently confirmed in ash trees near Randolph, NY according to the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets. This introduced wood-boring beetle has the potential to cause severe economic and ecological damage in New York forests as it has been associated with 100% ash mortality near Detroit, MI where it was first found in 2002, said Dr. Melissa Fierke, Assistant Professor of Forest Entomology at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Shrub Willow To Power Maple Syrup Production

The Vernon-Verona-Sherrill School District agriculture program has run a very successful maple syrup operation for many years. VVS ag teacher Keith Schiebel wanted an alternatuve to the non-renewable fossil fuels currently used to power the production. SUNY-ESF is helping the district to plant 2.5 acres of shrub willow that can be harvested in four years and turned into wood chips that will provide the energy needed to produce the maple syrup.
