Record-setting Helicopter Pilot Honored by SUNY-ESF
The award dinner focused on the need to recognize the role of innovative transportation in sustainable communities. Honoree Scott Kasprowicz, who recently served as deputy secretary of transportation for the Commonwealth of Virginia. called for individuals to take responsibility for helping to solve the problem of getting people where they need to be. U.S. Secretary of Energy Visits ESF
Visiting with the energy secretary, Congressman Daniel B. Maffei (NY-25) Maffei announced that the city of Syracuse will receive $1,444,500 in Recovery Act EECBG funds to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lowering the city's energy costs, while creating local green jobs. 2nd International Biorefinery Conference

Test Run For New Fueling Station
Two new 3,000 gallon above-ground fuel storage tanks, each with its own dispensing system, have been installed on the campus of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) to supply the college's growing fleet of alternative fuel vehicles. (9/16)
SUNY-ESF Sets Plan for Carbon-Neutral Campus by 2015
The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) has developed a Climate Action Plan that will use a combination of renewable energy projects, sustainable construction, energy conservation and managed forestland to make the college carbon neutral by 2015.
ESF took the unusual step of involving students in the formulation of the plan, which was to be submitted Sept. 15 to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education as part of the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). (9/11)

The floor plan for Huntington Lodge revealed there could be a fireplace tucked behind what later became a closet in the front hall. Some exploration revealed a jumble of stone and cement that has been restored to providea warm welcome to visitors. (9/8)

The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) today welcomed 287 freshmen and 238 transfer students to campus. The combined total of 525 represents ESF's largest entering class ever. (8/27)

'Cow Power' Butter Sculpture Destined for ESF Fuel Tanks
For the second year in a row, ESF scientists will collect the butter at the end of the New York State Fair and process it into usable fuel. (8/26)

New Book Examines Environmental Reform Efforts
A new book co-edited by David Sonnenfeld, professor and chair of the ESF Department of Environmental Studies, marks three decades of scholarship on environmental reform around the world. Smardon Appointed Great Lakes Basin Advisory Council Chair
Dr. Richard C. Smardon, ESF professor of environmental studies, has been appointed chair of the New York State Great Lakes Basin Advisory Council by Gov. David Paterson. The council advises the governor and legislature on Great Lakes Policy issues. Smardon has been a member of the council since 1989 as a governor's appointment for research. (8/14)

SUNY-ESF Builds Wind Turbine Power Generator
The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) today began testing a new "homeowner-sized" wind turbine to power its remote classrooms at Heiberg Forest in Tully, N.Y. As part of ESF's commitment to service learning, a group of students analyzed various locations for a wind turbine and their work helped locate the turbine at Heiberg. Another student worked to assemble and erect the wind turbine. Once testing is complete, the new ESF wind turbine will be tied in to National Grid and begin producing electrical power. (7/21)

Emerald ash borer was recently confirmed in ash trees near Randolph, NY according to the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets. This introduced wood-boring beetle has the potential to cause severe economic and ecological damage in New York forests as it has been associated with 100% ash mortality near Detroit, MI where it was first found in 2002, said Dr. Melissa Fierke, Assistant Professor of Forest Entomology at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Shrub Willow To Power Maple Syrup Production
The Vernon-Verona-Sherrill School District agriculture program has run a very successful maple syrup operation for many years. VVS ag teacher Keith Schiebel wanted an alternatuve to the non-renewable fossil fuels currently used to power the production. SUNY-ESF is helping the district to plant 2.5 acres of shrub willow that can be harvested in four years and turned into wood chips that will provide the energy needed to produce the maple syrup. ESF Hosts MDA Announcement of Grants for Growth Winners
The Metropolitan Development Association (MDA) announced $345,000 in funding for the seventh round of Grants for Growth (GFG) awards made in support of five new university-industry collaborations. The participants of the event were also updated on the progress of GFG success story Anteck Inc. of Syracuse - winner of a Grant for Growth Round II award and partnering with SUNY ESF. Present to congratulate the winners were Rob Simpson, President & CEO of the MDA, the Honorable John De Francisco, NYS Senate, Bob Roberts, Chairman of the GFG Advisory.

CNY Naturally Chilled Water Project Charts Its Progress
