I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Process

I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Process

The Immigration Reform and Control Act requires all U.S. employers to verify the identity and employment eligibility of all new employees—citizens and non-citizens alike. Accordingly, all employers must complete and retain I-9 files for each individual they hire for employment in the United States. On the form, the employer must examine the employment eligibility and identity document(s) (e.g., I-20/ DS-2019, passport, I-94 card) an employee presents to determine whether the document(s) reasonably appear to be genuine and relate to the individual and record the document information on the Form I-9.

Even if you already have a Social Security Number (SSN), you must still complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification process with any new employer. Please note however, it is not necessary to do an additional I-9 if your employment changes from one academic department to another as long as the same University remains your employer.

Working on the SUNY-ESF Campus

If you are a SUNY-ESF student who intends to work on the SUNY-ESF campus, you must complete the I-9 process at 216 Bray Hall prior to beginning employment. Once your I-9 has been completed, you are eligible to work on ESF campus regardless of whether or not you already have a Social Security Number; If you do not have a Social Security Number, you must apply for one at this time.

Your I-9 will remain valid until the end date indicated on your I-20 or DS-2019; if you extend your I-20/ DS-2019, you must bring your extended document to Human Resources so that they can make a copy and update your I-9 accordingly.

Please access the handout below for additional information about the documentation required to complete the I-9 process.

Any inquires related to your ESF I-9 should be directed to Human Resources..

Working on the Syracuse University Campus

As a SUNY-ESF student, you are also eligible to work on the Syracuse University campus. If you are offered a job on the Syracuse University campus, you must complete the I-9 process at Syracuse University's Office of Human Resources ( 210 Steele Hall). You cannot begin working on-campus until the Human Resources has received all of the required I-9 documents and your information has been entered into the University computer system. If you extend your I-20/ DS-2019, you must bring your extended document to Human Resources so that they can make a copy and update your I-9 accordingly.

Please access the handout below for additional information about the documentation required to complete the I-9 process.

Working Off-Campus

If you receive authorization for work off-campus (e.g., Curricular Practical Training, Academic Training, Optional Practical Training), an I-9 must be completed with your employer within three days of the start of your employment. Your employer should provide additional instructions and all inquiries should be directed to your employer.
