United States Social Security

If you are offered employment in the United States, you must obtain a U.S. social security number, which is used by the U.S. government to identify wage earners for tax purposes. The number assigned by ESF (713-99-xxxx) to new international students is not a valid U.S. social security number for employment purposes.

To apply for a social security number you must complete the Social Security application and take it along with the following documents to the Social Security Office, Federal Building, 4th Floor, 100 South Clinton Street, Syracuse, NY 13261 (800) 772-1213. With the Social Security application you must present evidence of your ESF student status, your passport, your I-20 or IAP-66 form and your I-94 form. The office is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (closed on federal holidays.)

U.S. Social Security numbers are issued only to foreign nationals who are authorized to work.

A social security number is not required for opening a bank account, registering for school, filing a U.S. tax form or applying for a driver’s license. If you are required to file a tax return but are not eligible for a U.S. social security number, you will have to apply to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for a Tax Identification Number (ITIN) on form W-7. This form may be obtained from the IRS office at 100 South Clinton Street (315) 233-7300 or from ESF’s Payroll Office in 102 Bray Hall.
