The New Vision Environmental Science and Engineering Program is a comprehensive program designed to enable College bound students to gain real-life knowledge and experience in the field of Environmental Science.
The students in the New Visions program at SUNY-ESF and Cortland-BOCES take two college classes (Global Environment and Writing in the Environment) which lay the foundation for field and laboratory activities.

Activities during the academic year 2003-04:Fall 2003:
- Wrote about their experiences at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, where they went hiking and cross-country skiing
- Taught composting techniques to elementary students
- Collected stream insects to construct an index of water quality
- Ran maple lines at Heiberg Forest for maple syrup production
- Compared the survival rate of native and hatchery-raised fish using electroshocking equipment
- Eradicated exotic plants at Baltimore Woods
- Visited Roosevelt Wildlife Museum at ESF
- Went overnight camping at Hoxie Gorge to practice sustainable living and winter survival skills
- Went on a field trip to Montezuma Wildlife Refuge
- Assist with on-going research at ESF
- Learn to identify trees
- Implement an action plan to make Syracuse more environmentally-friendly
- Participate in college classes and labs at ESF
- Design a sustainable city with help from undergraduates from ESF and SU
- Learn to use GPS units
- Design a nature preserve using GIS
