Volunteers Needed for the 5th Annual Onondaga Creek Cleanup
8:30 am

Help clean up Syracuse's hidden oasis- Onondaga Creek! Volunteers are needed to work by both land and "sea" to remove trash from the waters and banks of the creek.

Bring a Canoe! Boats are always in short supply and are a much-needed component of the creek clean up each year. If you are willing to get wet - you can be part of the boat-crew that floats down the creek, pulling up bicycles, shopping carts, tires, and more. The canoes are used to transport this trash to the unloading areas on shore.

Land-Lover? If you would prefer to keep your feet on the shore, become a member of the land-crew. Volunteers working from land help pick up trash along the stream banks and work to unload trash-filled canoes and carry the garbage to nearby dumpsters for disposal.

Join your neighbors and community members for a day of trash-filled fun to help improve Onondaga Creek!

Saturday, September 9th and 16th.
8:30 - Lunch Time.
Pizza Party to Follow!

**REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED**

Call Cornell Cooperative Extension 424-9485 ext. 0

Please indicate if you are able to bring a boat, and whether you have a preference for the boat-crew or land-crew. Pick-up trucks are also needed.
Sorry, no children under the age of 12.

What to Bring: Please wear sturdy shoes and work clothes. Gloves, trash bags, and bottled water will be provided.

Stream Restoration Presentation
10:30 pm

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County is sponsoring Stream Restoration as a Cornerstone of Urban Revitalization, a presentation by Robin Chanay on June 7, 2006, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Cornell Cooperative Extension office, 220 Herald Place, 2nd Floor, Syracuse, NY 13202.

The registration form for this event at the Cooperative Extension can be downloaded here. Please return it with your registration fee to Cornell Cooperative Extension, by June 1st, 2006.

Robin Chanay, a nationally-known expert in partnership building to improve watershed health, will be in Syracuse on June 7, 2006 to share her insight on community building through stream restoration. Central New York is experiencing a resurgence of public interest in the protection and revitalization of our local streams, including Onondaga Creek and Nine Mile Creek. Ms. Chanay will examine case studies of successful restoration projects from around the country and the role of agencies, community involvement, and public support in those successes.

Robin Chanay has over ten years experience in organizing and coordinating efforts to improve watershed health. She is a board member of CRUW, the Coalition for Restoration of Urban Waters. She has worked with many national groups including includes River Network, Adopt-A-Watershed, The Nature Conservancy and EPA. She has special interest in combined sewer overflow (CSO) and urban stream restoration and brings experiences from her work in
Atlanta and with the Anacostia River restoration project in Washington. Her work focuses on partnership building amongst diverse interests to achieve watershed protection and restoration, bringing together grassroots groups, community leaders, governments, schools, underserved communities and other stakeholders in the process. Ms. Chanay believes success can only be achieved when all the community is involved; when the community is informed; and when everyone works in partnership.

Ms. Chanay will be also speak at the Palace Theater, 2384 James Street, in Eastwood at 7 PM on June 7, 2006, following the daytime presentation to local officials. The evening presentation is free and open to the public, funded by National Grid through Cornell Cooperative Extension to promote community sustainability.

Dave teaches stream restoration workshops at the University of Buffalo and has been involved in many stream restoration projects in western New York. He is visiting Syracuse next week to lecture and tour Onondaga Creek sites with SUNY ESF. Catherine Landis, Ginny Collins, and Dr. Ted Endreny at SUNY ESF have kindly extended an invitation for the Working Group to visit with Dave Derrick, too.

A schedule outlining Dave Derrick's visit is attached. On Wednesday, November 30th, the Working Group and friends can meet with Dave Derrick and visit Onondaga Creek with him at the Zen Center, 266 West Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse, from 3:00pm - 6:00pm. In addition, Dave Derrick is leading a field trip of restoration sites in the Buffalo area on Tuesday, November 29th.
