About the creek : Valley Neighborhood

By valley resident and Working Group Member

Our section of the Creek pretty much begins just south of Kelly Park where it flows out of the Nation and is channelized straight towards the City. It is fenced in, but this doesn't stop walkers, joggers, bicyclists, dirt bikers, cross-country skiing and fishing along the banks. Fishing is particularly popular just past the spillway at Dorwin Ave. Canoeists and kayakers make occasional trips down the Creek. There are ducks and great blue herons that are often in evidence. The creek is crossed by bridges at Dorwin, Seneca Turnpike, and Ballantyne, and footbridges at Clary Middle and Van Duyn Elementary schools. Thos schools, as well as Meachem Elementary and Faith Heritage Schools and the Zen Center border the Creek.

The water in the Creek is surprisingly clear and placid in the summer and fall, but fast flowing and turgid in winter and spring. It is very shallow in summertime, often measuring less than a foot deep. In the spring, the water sometimes rises halfway up the earthen banks.

The Creek used to meander through Nedrow and the present Meachem Field, but was channelized in the 1950s because of flooding. A branch used to power the mill wheel at the present site of Lee's Feed Store on Milburn Drive.
