Polystyrene (aka, styrofoam)
Background...
The neggative effects of styrofoam are well known, as campaigns were successful in stoping McDonalds from using styrofoam. The petro-chemicals used to make styrofoam can leak out or migrate into the food, and they may contain trace elements of carcinogens. Not to mention they are non biodegratable, so it takes thousands of years for nature to break them down. Yet Syracuse University still uses hundreds of these containers a day.
In he Past...
SEAC has held a potluck to go over and research the facts about Styrofoam. We have made fact sheets and flyers to educate the campus. But unfortunately the timing was a little too late
In the Future...
So SEAC plans on getting started early next fall by tabling, educating the campus, getting petitions signed, working with the dining halls to either implement a paper "to-go" tray, or get more tupperware available.
