The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) received two exemplary program awards from the Continuing Education Association of New York, Inc. (CEANY).
CEANY dedicates itself to the promotion and support of quality programs of public continuing higher education in New York State. The association advocates for the role of continuing education and informs and influences state policy affecting continuing education.
Each year, the fall CEANY conference is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate contributions made by continuing education professionals as well as exemplary programs, students and partners.
This year, SUNY-ESF received two of these six exemplary program awards, one for “Credit Program” and one for “Advertisement”, for contributions in programming and marketing.
Our ESF in the High School program received the Credit Program award for its contributions to the advancement of program planning and continuing education. ESF in the High School is a school/college partnership dual-enrollment program that enables qualified students to experience college-level course work while still in high school and explore diverse interests and career opportunities in various fields. Courses include ESF’s environmental science course, Global Environment (EFB 120, 3 college credits) and Writing and the Environment (CLL 190, 3 college credits). Ultimately, this program seeks to develop students and citizens who have a solid understanding of science and a sense of wonder and appreciation for the Earth as a system. The program helps bridge the gap between high school and college and exposes students to the increasing fields of environmental science and engineering.
Currently over 400 students participate in ESF in the High School in urban, suburban and rural schools throughout Central New York, Rochester, and New York City.
Introduction to Green Entrepreneurship, a new 3-credit course designed to introduce rising high school seniors and lower division college students to the challenges and goals of creating a start-up venture in environmental science or technology, received the Advertisement award for its creative and effective marketing techniques in print media. This course captures the entrepreneurial spirit by motivating students to create new ways of thinking to Improve Your World. With the challenge to think “outside the box,” expand a growing interest in what it means to be “green,” and be part of a new way of thinking about how we do business, students have a renewed sense of urgency at the importance of environmental issues.
In 2008 nearly 30 students from 22 high schools in nine NYS counties participated in the first Introduction to Green Entrepreneurship course. This course will be offered again for college students and other adults on June 8-12, 2009 and for rising high school seniors and recent (2009) high school graduates on July 27-31, 2009.
The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry extends appreciation to CEANY for its efforts on behalf of public continuing education. We also accept this CEANY recognition proudly on behalf of our many PK-12, college/university, public and private partners.
