Jeremy Harris - Former Mayor of Honolulu, Hawaii
Mayor Jeremy Harris served for more than ten years as the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii, the 12th largest city in the United States. He retired from politics in January of 2005.
Under Mayor Harris’ leadership Honolulu achieved worldwide recognition.
During his three terms as Mayor, Honolulu was recognized as one of the best managed cities in the United States. In addition to the hundreds of awards the City received during his tenure, Mayor Harris also earned national and international acclaim.Mayor Harris is the only individual to receive the award of Public Administrator of the Year for two consecutive years from the Hawaii branch of the American Association of Public Administrators. He has served as the Public Director on the National Board of Directors of the American Institute of Architects. Mayor Harris is currently a senior visiting faculty member in energy and environment at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, and an advisor on sustainability to the National Academy of Science in Washington D.C... Mayor Harris holds a Masters of Science degree in Population and Environmental Biology, specializing in urban ecosystems, from the University of California, Irvine, and is the author of a new book, The Renaissance of Honolulu, The Sustainable Rebirth of an American City.

S. Richard Fedrizzi - President, CEO & Founding Chairman, U.S. Green Building Council
Rick Fedrizzi, founding chairman of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), was appointed President & CEO of USGBC in April 2004. Under his leadership, the Council has embarked on a new era of growth, openness and transparency. Rick has spearheaded a number of critical initiatives, including a major refinement of the LEED Rating System, and its extension into Homes, Schools and Healthcare, integration and capacity building to drive growth of the Council’s 70+ local Chapters, and an internal reorganization to align the Council’s resources with its strategic goals. Under his leadership the Council’s membership has grown to nearly 13,000 organizations representing millions of employees, stakeholders and communities.
The Council continues to undertake a series of far-reaching domestic and international initiatives under Rick’s guidance, including working with the Clinton Global Initiative, the International Codes Council, and other national and international NGOs and trade associations.
Outreach and education are at the top of Rick’s agenda in 2008 and the Council is ramping up its educational program by offering additional in-person workshops and expanding on-line opportunities. Equally important is responding to an increased need for green building research, and USGBC will continue to be at the forefront of that initiative.Prior to his appointment, Rick was the founder and president of Green-Think, an environmentally focused marketing and communications consulting firm. Rick founded Green-Think after a distinguished 25-year career at United Technologies Corporation (UTC), where he served as an in-house environmental marketing consultant.

Diane Brandli - ASID, CID, LEED AP, Director of Interior Design, Ashley McGraw Architects, P.C.
Diane Brandli has worked as an Interior Designer for over 25 years, and has been a design team member for many award-winning educational and institutional projects.
She routinely incorporates sustainable products and strategies into her work, and her recent experience includes several LEED registered projects. She is a member of the U. S. Green Building Council Upstate New York Chapter, and was recently named the LEED for Schools Advocate for the Chapter, heading up a “Green Schools” campaign across the state.
Her volunteer work includes her role as founding member and Secretary of GreeningUSA, a local non-profit group dedicated to sustainable communities. She is also the editor of the GreeningUSA News Digest, with a distribution of 1,200, and growing.
Diane's passion for sustainable design has led her to extensively research sustainable products. And, that has led to a number of speaking engagements across New York State.
She is also past-President of ASID’s New York Upstate/Canada East Chapter and remains active in the chapter, writing a sustainable design column for the chapter’s newsletter.
Diane continues her thirsty quest for green knowledge and enlightenment.

Michael H. Nicklas - FAIA, President & Co-founder, Innovative Design, Inc., Raleigh, NC
Michael Nicklas is president and co-founder of Innovative Design, Inc., founded in 1977. Since its beginning, the firm has completed over 4750 projects – all of them incorporating renewable energy technologies as a significant aspect of their design. Innovative Design is architect of record on 15 new, high performance educational facilities and 41 additions/renovations that have incorporated a significant number of green features. Our 99 green educational facilities with which Innovative Design has been involved are now saving over $3.5 million in energy bills and 35 million gallons of water per year.
The firm’s active research program has pioneered design features such as the integration of photovoltaics into building skin design and development of high-temperature, thermal solar systems for roof-integrated industrial and commercial roof assemblies. Innovative Design is a national leader in providing natural daylighting design solutions for a wide range of applications.
Michael Nicklas has served on the board of directors of either the NC Solar Energy Association, American Solar Energy Society or the International Solar Energy Society every year since 1979. While serving as chair of NCSEA, chair of ASES (twice), and president of ISES, he has led many of these societies’ most significant efforts – from the implementation of solar tax credits in the NC Legislature to having language supportive of energy-efficiency and solar energy included within the United Nations Earth Summit’s Agenda 21. In promoting solar energy, Nicklas has met with the Heads-of-State of eight countries. He has presented lectures and organized conferences around the globe to educate and encourage sustainable energy. Nicklas holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from North Carolina State University and was made Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2001. Nicklas is also a Fellow of the American Solar Energy Society.
Green Government: Where We Have Been, Where We Are Now, and Where We Are Going
Patricia M. Mosley - Director, Onondaga County Division of Purchase
Patricia Mosley is a 32-year veteran of municipal government in Onondaga County, having designed and implemented both the City of Syracuse, and the Onondaga County Materials Management offices. In 2008 Director Mosley was asked to return as the Purchasing Director, after having served more than 20 years as the Assistant Commissioner of Correction for Onondaga County.
Before "reduce, reuse, recycle" was even a slogan, Director Mosley was finding ways to reduce government waste by redistributing furniture and equipment to service beyond its initial purpose. During her tenure in local government, her departments were among the first to recycle, to eliminate nonbiodegradable containers, to compost food products, to automate systems eliminating paper and waste, and to evaluate and implement energy management systems at the correctional facility.
County Executive Joanne Mahoney has prioritized sustainable practices throughout county operations and is seeking solutions through the Division of Purchase. Mosley's team has created a vision of SMART Procurement, which represents strategic, standardized, sustainable, modernized, accessible, responsive and technologically driven procurement practices. SMART Procurement will include a comprehensive review of all purchase of county goods and services for best green and sustainable practices to reflect the County's renewed commitment to Green Government.
David Ashley - LEED AP and Peter Larson of Ashley McGraw Architect, P.C.
David C. Ashley, AIA, LEED has given lectures and seminars on green building principles, including the E-4 Conferences for EBA and NYSERDA, NYSERDA Green School presentations, lectures at SUNY ESF, AIA, CSI, ASID, subcontractors’ associations and Society of Military Engineers. He regularly conducts classes on becoming a LEED Accredited Professional. He assists in sustainable issues on all of his firm’s projects. One such current project is the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems which is being designed to achieve a LEED platinum level certification.
Peter E. Larson, AIA, LEED AP is the leader of Ashley McGraw Architects’ Advanced Building Studio. This studio is a separate consultancy within Ashley McGraw, committed to implementing the firm’s goal of creating zero carbon footprint, zero fossil fuel energy, environmentally responsible buildings on both Ashley McGraw’s projects and as a consultant to other architects and building owners.

Fernando Ortiz, Jr. - Commissioner of Community Development
Fernando Ortiz, Jr. is the Commissioner of the City of Syracuse Department of Community Development, and has served in this capacity since his appointment by Mayor Matthew J. Driscoll in 2001. As Commissioner of the Department of Community Development, Mr. Ortiz is responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing the City’s community development agenda, and supervising all of the Department’s programs and activities.
In his capacity as co-Chair of the Syracuse Sustainable Design Assessment Team (SDAT), he is responsible for working with a multidisciplinary team of local professional volunteers and City staff. The local SDAT committee works to implement the recommendations of the AIA Assessment team, developing a sustainability plan for the City of Syracuse-Onondaga County area.
Additionally, under his supervision, the staff of the Department of Community Development Division of Planning is charged for advancing the goals of the City’s 2025 Comprehensive Plan. Currently, the Department with the assistance of an all professional volunteer Committee and an outside consultant Clough Harbor and Associates, it is developing a City-wide land use plan.
Andrew M. Maxwell, MPA, APA
Andrew is a 5th generation Syracusan and a graduate of Thomas J. Corcoran High School. He received his B.A. in History and American Studies from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY in 2005, and his Masters in Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in 2006. Since August 2006 he has worked in the City of Syracuse’s Community Development Department managing the City’s Comprehensive Plan: 2025, the City’s Tomorrow’s Neighborhoods Today (TNT) citizen participation program, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) programming, as well as City coordination of the AIA’s Sustainable Design Assessment Team (SDAT) program.
Dean Biancavilla - Urban Design Center of Syracuse (UDC)
Dean Biancavilla is currently the state director for the American Institute of Architects Central New York Chapter, serving on the AIA New York State organization Board of Directors. Dean is also the Director of the Urban Design Center of Syracuse,Inc., a not-for-profit organization linked to Syracuse University School of Architecture, the American Institute of Architects Central New York Chapter (AIA/CNY), SUNY ESF, ASLA and the Downtown Committee of Syracuse.
Biancavilla is the current Chair of the American Institute of Architects/New York State Committee on Urban Design which includes representatives from various Chapters around the state. Dean is also the Co-Chair of the AIA/CNY Chapter Committee on Urban Design. Mr. Biancavilla has participated in numerous community charrettes and studies for neighborhoods in Syracuse, Carthage and Rochester. Robert Haley Jr., AIA - Urban Design Center of Syracuse (UDC)
A native of CNY, and a 37-year resident of the City Syracuse, Haley has an undergraduate degree in Architecture from Syracuse University in 1966 and a masters in Architecture from University of Oregon in 1970. He is on the faculty of the SU School of Architecture 1970-77, & 1975-6 London Faculty with SU/DIPA and has a New York State License in Architecture 1972.
Bob is Director of Design at Ashley McGraw Architects, Architects, Executive Architects for the Syracuse Center of Excellence with Toshiko Mori Architects; and for the new City/County Courthouse 2005. He also acts as Vice Chair of the City of Syracuse Landmarks Preservation Board from 1996 to the present. He is Vice President of Focus Greater Syracuse Board of Directors, 2001- present. He is Co-Director and founder of the community planning and design “not-for-profit” Urban Design Center of Syracuse, 1999- present and a LEED Accredited Design Professional 2003, promoting Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design.

Edward Bogucz - Syracuse University, Executive Director Center of Excellence in EnvironmentalSystems, Ph.D., MechanicalEngineering, Lehigh University
Edward Bogucz became executive director of the New York Center of Excellence in Environmental Systems in August 2003. Previously, Dr. Bogucz served more than eight years as dean of SU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS). His areas of research expertise include fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and multidisciplinary analysis and design. Over the course of his career at SU, Dr. Bogucz has been principal investigator (or co-PI) on research projects with sponsors such as the National Science Foundation, NASA, New York State, and the Carrier Corporation. He currently serves as a director on the boards of Herley Industries, the New York Indoor Environmental Quality Center Inc. (NYIEQ),and the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology.
Marilyn Higgins - Vice President for community engagement and economic impact at Syracuse University
Marilyn Higgins has been named vice president for community engagement and economic impact at Syracuse University, effective Oct. 15. In this newly created position, Higgins will report to Vice Chancellor and Provost Eric F. Spina and work closely with administrative and academic leaders at the University.
The primary thrust of Higgins' responsibilities will be implementation and fulfillment of externally funded, university-community projects. In this role, she will work with a cross-University team from Academic Affairs, Government and Community Relations, Public Affairs, Engagement Initiatives, and Corporate and Foundation Relations to advance key community engagement projects, including the Near Westside Arts, Technology and Design Quarter, the Connective Corridor, the South Side Innovation Center (SSIC) and the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems. Teaming with Bruce Kingma, associate provost for entrepreneurship and innovation, on implementation of the Syracuse Campus-Community Entrepreneurship Initiative (Enitiative), Higgins will help facilitate collaboration of students, faculty and the University's community partners at each of these sites. She will also work with the University community to identify future engagement initiatives, the best places to create them, and opportunities for new external support.
Kevin Stack and Josh Stack - Northeast Green Building Consulting, LLC
Kevin Stack owns Northeast Green Building Consulting, Inc. (NGBC), a company based in Central New York that provides sustainability consulting, including biomimetic building and community design services. Kevin integrates ecological standards into the build environment through a 7th Generation Sustainability Ethic, to restore human and ecological health. Kevin’s related company Northeast Natural Homes, Inc. (Northeast) recently built the first LEED for Homes Certified project in NYS.
Kevin is a LEED accredited professional, an Energy Star builder, and a RESNET Certified Energy Star HERS rater. He is a Building Performance Institute certified Building Analyst and has completed several hundred energy ratings. He is a Graduate of SUNY College of Environmental Sciences & Forestry (ESF) and Syracuse University (SU) with degrees in Biology and Forestry, and teaches “Innovations in Sustainable Building” at SUNY ESF and Onondaga Community College (OCC). Kevin sits on the national LEED for homes committee, the entity that drafted the LEED for Homes rating system. Northeast is a charter member of the Syracuse Center of Excellence (CoE) in Environmental & Energy Systems. Kevin also serves on the board of the Syracuse CoE, USGBC NY Upstate Chapter, Home Builders & Remodelers Association of CNY, and is President of the Northeast HERS Alliance. He is the past Chair of the NY Upstate Chapter, and serves as the regional representative and Residential Green Building Advocate. He advises colleges and universities regarding their construction management curriculums and donates time to affordable building causes, including Habitat for Humanity and Home Headquarters.
Terry Ettinger - Principal Horticulture Consulting Services
Terry Ettinger owns the environmental landscape, turf and arboriculture consulting practice, Terry L. Ettinger Horticulture Consulting Services. The company provides landscape design and management, communication, education and research services to individuals, businesses and institutions throughout the northeast.
He also shares his expertise with hundreds of thousands of upstate New York residents each week via his newspaper column and award-winning radio and television programs.
Tom Kubala - The Kubala Washatko Architects, Inc.
When Tom Kubala founded Kubala Washatko Architects, Inc. in 1980 with Allen Washatko, he brought with him extensive experience gained through professional association with highly regarded firms in Wisconsin and Minnesota. As a principal of The Kubala Washatko Architects, Mr. Kubala oversees projects from first schematics through final drawings. He is involved in every aspect of the practice and has directed many of Kubala Washatko’s award-winning projects and research endeavors. He has served as principal-in-charge for a wide range of building and planning projects, and is skilled in both architectural design and in the execution of construction documents. His completed projects exhibit a sensitivity and understanding of function, scale, construction methodology and materials.
Mr. Kubala’s strength lies in translating complicated client needs into outstanding design solutions. Through teaching and publishing, he not only remains current with the directions of and the influences in the field of architecture, but contributes to its development and growth.
Kenneth Bobis -AIA, LEED A.P.
Ken Bobis is a registered NYS architect and member of the American Institute of Architects and a graduate of the Syracuse University School of Architecture. He is also a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and a LEED accredited professional.
Ken is a professor at Onondaga Community College where he has taught design, construction, and drawing courses in the Architecture and Interior Design program for over twenty-five years. He chaired the Architecture Dept. for 9 years. Throughout his teaching career he has stressed the importance of solar energy in building design. Ken is also a member of the President’s Sustainability Task Force at OCC.
Ken serves on the board of GreeningUSA and chairs the GreeningUSA Education Committee. GreeningUSA is a Syracuse-based non-profit organization advocating sustainable environments to the benefit of local economies and communities. The Education Committee is currently undertaking several projects involving the advancement of sustainability education for students in schools and colleges and people of all ages.
Greg Michel is an environmental educator and writer. While working on an environmental education program called “Exploration for Wisdom: a 4300 kilometer trek across Japan”, Greg coordinated international online environmental education programs for World School Network and led outdoor environmental education programs for Eco-Club. Greg has also coordinated international, environmental programs for the Japanese Government, designed exhibits for the World EXPO 2005 AICHI Global Village and sits on the board for Ecoplus.
Since returning home to Central New York in late 2006, Greg became involved with environmental education initiatives in the area including Accelerate 2007, the GoGreen Initiative, and the GreeningUSA education committee.
Greg works as an urban and community forestry educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County and is primarily in charge of the Onondaga Earth Corps, a youth employment program focusing on urban forestry on the Southside of Syracuse.
Mark Naef is a long time, local environmental activist, working for NYPIRG, Recycle First, RRT and Daystar Recycling. He is the founder and owner of Naef Recycling, the largest independent municipal recycling facility in NYS. He currently serves on the board of Greening USA, where he is active in the education committee overseeing the development of the Sustainability Academy. He is also on the board of the New York State association of Reduction, Reuse and Recycling where he chairs the state Go Green Initiative.
