Pre-Health Advising
ESF students interested in medicine, dentistry, optometry and veterinary medicine are encouraged to identify themselves to the ESF Pre-Health Coordinator who can then assit them in exploring these pathways, advising them on academic qualifications and preparing for the application process. Additionally, several academic departments pair pre-health interested students with academic advisors who have particular expertise in these areas. ESF pre-professional interested students may also participate in the Health Professions Advisory Program (HPAP) offered through Syracuse University.
Students should begin the pre-professional pathway as early in their academic programs as possible, attend seminars and participate in the preparatory workshops to ensure their success in the professional school admissions process. Most health professions schools require at least one year in each of the following subjects: English, general biology, general physics, general chemistry and organic chemistry; calculus is recommended. ESF majors in environmental biology, biotechnology, chemistry or environmental science are well-suited to prepare students for health professions. A new major in environmental health, which will provide an additional pathway to pre-health preparation, will be available beginning fall 2014. In addition to the general science background, colleges of veterinary medicine require coursework in bacteriology or microbiology, and veterinary medical experience is highly recommended.
Regardless of the specific prerequisites of a school of medicine, dentistry, optometry or veterinary medicine, coursework available at ESF has proven to be valuable to applicants to those professional programs. More information may be obtained by contacting the ESF Pre-Health Coordinator:
