Swamp pink, dragon’s mouth
Arethusa bulbosa
(ar-e-THEW-sa Bul-BO-sa)

: May through July
Appearance: One of the showiest orchids in bog habitats, about 2 - 8” tall with minimal grass-like leaves. Stem supports one 1 - 2” flower, a beautiful rose-purple to brilliant pink with a highly decorated lip. Rarity: Rare to local, T (State), G4 S2 (TNC)

Grass pink
Calopogon tuberosus (cal-o-PO-gon tu-ber-O-sus)
Blooms: June through August
Appearance: Another showy orchid found in bogs, 4 - 20” tall with lance shaped leaves. Stem topped by a large (1 - 3”) open flower, typically pale lavender to brilliant pink.
Rarity: Occasional, V (State)
Comments: Also exists as a white flowered form.
Pale coral-root, early coral-root
Corallorhiza trifida (cor-a-lo-RYE-sa TRIF-i-da)
Blooms: May through July
Appearance: One of the first coral-roots to bloom, can form clumps of leafless stems 4 - 12” tall with yellowish green flowers and a white lip.
Rarity: Occasional, V (State)
Comments: Also found in rich mesic forests and northern white-cedar swamps, often in wet, peaty depressions.
Bog twayblade, yellow twayblade, fen orchid
Liparis loeselii (LIP-ar-iss low-SELL-ee-eye)
Blooms: June through August
Appearance: Plant 2 - 6” tall with 3 - 15 small yellow-green flowers with a prominent spur extending from the base of the flower. Leaves lanced-shaped, in a pair, clasping the stem.
Rarity: Occasional, V (State)
Southern twayblade
Listera australis (LIS-ter-a aus-TRAL-iss)
Blooms: May through July
Appearance: Plant 2 - 4” tall with a pair of elliptical leaves clasping the stem. Flowers small, 8 - 20 per plant. Lip rusty red with a green spot in the center, bottom of lip with a wishbone shape.
Rarity: Rare to local, T (State), G4 S1S2 (TNC)
Comments: Often found among Sphagnum mosses, easily overlooked
Green adder’s-mouth
Malaxis unifolia (ma-LAX-iss you-ne-FOE-lee-a)
Blooms: June through September
Appearance: Plant is 4 - 12” tall with one leaf. Immature flower head resembles a thimble, with small, long-stalked greenish flowers when mature.
Rarity: Local, V (State)
Comments: Can also be found in open woods and in dry soils.
White fringed orchid
Platanthera blephariglottis (pla-TAN-ther-a BLEF-are-e-glot-iss)
Blooms: June through August
Appearance: Tall, 8 - 24”, with numerous fringed white flowers spirally arranged around the stem. Leaves lance-shaped, clasping the stem.
Rarity: Occasional, V (State)
Comments: Typically found in coastal areas on Long Island.
Orange orchid, yellow fringed orchid
Platanthera ciliaris (pla-TAN-ther-a see-lee-AR-iss)
Blooms: June through September
Appearance: Another tall Platanthera species, 8 - 24”, with showy brilliant orange to yellow flowers spirally arranged around the flower stalk. Flowers number 25 -115. Leaves lance-shaped, clasping the stem.
Rarity: Rare to local, E (State), G5 S1 (TNC)
Green woodland orchid
Platanthera clavellata (pla-TAN-ther-a clav-i-LAY-ta)
Blooms: June through August
Appearance: With 1 - 2 basal leaves, 3 - 5” long. Plant height ranges between 4 - 16”, with flower stalks holding 3 - 15 yellow-green partially rotated flowers with a club-like spur descending from the base of the lip.
Rarity: Local to occasional, V (State)
Bog-candle, white bog-orchid
Platanthera dilatata (pla-TAN-ther-a die-la-TAY-ta)
Blooms: June through September
Appearance: Can be up to 3’ in height, with many lance-shaped leaves up to 12” long at the base of the plant. Many bright white, scented flowers cover the flower stalk.
Rarity: Occasional, V (State)
Comments: One of the few native orchids with a fragrance, flowers have a sweet spicy scent.
Tubercled orchid
Platanthera flava (pla-TAN-ther-a FLAY-va)
Blooms: June through August
Appearance: Has several lance-shaped leaves, up to 8” long, on a 12 - 28” stem. Flowers are yellow-green in color and range from 10 - 40 in number. Total plant height is 12 - 28”
Rarity: Rare to local, V (State)
Large purple fringed orchid
Platanthera grandiflora (pla-TAN-ther-a GRAND-I-flor-a)
Blooms: June through August
Appearance: This impressive plant reaches 3 - 4’ in height and is covered with 30 - 60 showy magenta to pink flowers with a highly fringed lip.
Rarity: Local to occasional, V (State)
Comments: Also found in rich mesic forests, similar in appearance to Platanthera psycodes, but inflorescence is larger and contains more flowers.
Tall northern green orchid, Nuttall’s green orchid
Platanthera huronensis (pla-TAN-ther-a yur-on-EN-sis)
Blooms: May through September
Appearance: A plain green-flowered species, has a similar appearance to Platanthera aquilonis. Flowers are more white than yellow and scented.
Rarity: Occasional to frequent, V (State)

Platanthera lacera (pla-TAN-ther-a LAS-er-a)
Blooms: June through September
Appearance: A tall species, 8 - 24”, with lance-shaped leaves clasping the stem. Flowers small and numerous, arranged around the flower stalk. Flowers green to white, highly fringed.
Rarity: Occasional, V (State)

Platanthera psycodes (pla-TAN-ther-a sye-CO-deez)
Blooms: July through September
Appearance: Similar in appearance to Platanthera grandiflora, but inflorescence is smaller and contains fewer flowers.
Rarity: Occasional, V (State)
Comments: Also found in rich mesic forests.
Rose pogonia, snake’s-mouth
Pogonia ophioglossoides (po-GO-nee-a off-e-o-gloss-OY-deez)
Blooms: June through August
Appearance: Another conspicuous species found in bogs and wet meadows, 4 - 10” tall with in conspicuous grass-like leaves. Flowers1 - 3” across, a beautiful rosy pink to lavender, lip delicately decorated.
Rarity: Occasional to frequent, V (State)
Comments: Often occurs in large populations, up to 10,000 plants.
Nodding lady’s-tresses
Spiranthes cernua (spur-ANN-theez CERN-u-a)
Blooms: August through November
Appearance: Plant 3 - 20” tall with grass-like leaves. Small, white flowers are numerous, up to 60, spirally arranged around the flower stalk. Flowers have a square or blocky appearance.
Rarity: Occasional to frequent, V (State)
Comments: One of the most frequently encountered orchids in bogs and wet meadows, can be highly variable in form.
