Rich mesic forests

A moist forest, neither very wet or very dry

Dominated by hardwoods such as sugar maple (Acer sacchaurm), beech (Fagus grandifolia) and yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis), mixed with conifers such as hemlock (Tsuga canadensis)

Soils are typically moist and contain a sufficient supply of nutrients to support a wide diversity of plant species

At higher elevations, these forests can be dominated by conifers such as spruce (Picea spp.) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea)
