Pink lady’s-slipper, moccasin flower

Cypripedium acaule (sip-re-PEE-dee-um a-CALL-e)
Blooms: May through July
Appearance: Has one leaf if immature and not flowering, two leaves if flowering. Leaves are elliptical, ribbed, and 4 - 8” long. The flowering stem is 6 - 16” long, flower is pink with a prominent lip.
Rarity: Occasional to frequent, V (State)
Comments: One of the most frequently encountered orchids in NY, found in a variety of habitats.





Downy rattlesnake-plantain

Goodyera pubescens (good-YER-a pue-BESS-inns)
Blooms: July through August
Appearance: Has a basal rosette of 3 - 8 bluish, leathery leaves, prominently veined with white. Flower stems are densely hairy, 8 - 16” tall, holding up to 80 small, fuzzy, greenish-white flowers.
Rarity: Local, V (State)
Comments: Leaves often persist through the winter.





Rattlesnake-plantain

Goodyera tesselata (good-YER-a tess-e-LAT-ta)
Blooms: July through September
Appearance: Has light blue-green basal leaves, prominently veined with white, about 1.5” long. Flowers are white, in varying numbers.
Rarity: Occasional to frequent, V (State)
Comments: Leaves often persist through the winter. Only known from eastern NY.





Slender lady’s-tresses

Spiranthes lacera (spur-ANN-theez LAS-er-a)
Blooms: July through August
Appearance: Plant 5 - 12” tall with small flowers arranged in a distinct spiral. Flowers number 12 - 40, white with a green throat. Leaves small, often absent at flowering time.
Rarity: Occasional, V (State)







Creamy lady’s-tresses

Spiranthes ochroleuca (spur-ANN-theez oh-crow-LEW-ca)
Blooms: August through October
Appearance: Flowers creamy white with a creamy-butterscotch yellow throat. Plant 4 - 6” tall with 12 - 35 small flowers spirally arranged around the flower stalk. Leaves small and grass-like.
Rarity: Occasional, V (State)
Comments: Common in disturbed areas.



Cranefly orchid

Tipularia discolor (tip-u-LAIR-ee-a dis-COL-or)
Blooms: July through August
Appearance: With one leaf, dark green above and purple below, emerges in late autumn, withers in May, followed by a tall, leafless flower stalk with 20 - 40 drooping flowers with shades of green, brown and purple.
Rarity: Rare to local, E (State), G4G5 S1 (TNC)
Comments: Only known from oak woods in southeastern NY.




Nodding pogonia

Triphora trianthophora (TRY-for-a try-an-THOF-o-ra)
Blooms: July through September
Appearance: Commonly has three flowers on one stem, each opening on a separate day. Plant 4 - 8” tall, with 2 - 8 heart-shaped leaves. Flowers are white to rose-colored.
Rarity: Local, E (State), G4 S1 (TNC)
