Graduate Research Topic
I am researching the stiffness, bending and shear strengths of multiple wood species indigenous to upstate New York, assembled in the form of cross-laminated timber (CLT). This is in hope of providing additional structural data backing future standards to be implemented in the US for CLT to be used as a viable means for alternative engineering and construction solutions.

Personal Statement
After spending a summer working as a timber framer while studying engineering and architecture in college, I developed a strong interest in the strength and structural performance of timber buildings. Since starting my current research project, I have been working to develop a non-destructuve method for assessing the structural characteristics of timber joinery. The goal of the research would be to assist design and construction teams in their work to efficiently adapt and reuse timber buildings for current needs.

Graduate Research Topic
My current research involves providing better information for the reuse and rehabilitation of timber structures. Specifically I have been working to develop a method to determine the rotational stiffness of timber joinery using vibration analysis.

Personal Statement
I am happy to be working toward my M.S. in Construction Management at SUNY ESF because not only do I learn about the nuts and bolts of how to manage construction, I get to learn about what is happening now and what is next in terms of construction methods and sustainability.

"Don't work toward freedom, but allow the work itself to be freedom." ~Dogen Hosokawa Roshi

Bio
Michelle, business owner of BPI accredited MBT Design, kicked-off her building science career as a home performance contractor for NYSERDA’s EmPower New York Program, an energy reduction service for low-income families. Embracing a whole system’s approach to building, she became a HERS Rater and BPI certified Building Analyst, Envelope, Heating, as well as AC/Heat Pump professional. With a commitment to professionalism and education, she’s assisting BPI as a Proctor and Quality Assurance Inspector. Additionally, she’s seeking her MS in Sustainable Construction Management at SUNY ESF to bind innovation and sustainability with affordability. Educated first in Fine Arts in ceramics at SUNY New Paltz, she understands the building world needs an aesthetic and perhaps feminine touch. A touch that she’s incorporating in her efficient and affordable tiny house project this spring.
