OUTREACH ABSTRACT

This poster focuses on the SUNY-ESF Service Learning/Youth Mentoring Initiative. The initiative partners ESF students with Shea Middle School students in Syracuse. Each mentoring relationship nurtures personal development, which ultimately fosters an enhanced sense of community for both ESF and Shea students. Projects have included restoring the school courtyard into an outdoor environmental education space; installing a butterfly garden; assessing water quality through an experiment tracking tadpoles’ development; researching and building a working volcano; and writing and designing a Central New York parks brochure. Service learning gives ESF students the opportunity to bridge citizenship skills with reading and writing projects. Shea students acquire a sense of pride in themselves and their community. ESF benefits because the project supports the college’s educational outreach mission. Youth mentoring is offered as part of a special section of Writing for Environmental Professionals (CLL 410), taught by Benette Whitmore
