Living and Learning: ESF’s Learning Community
Part of “Evolutions” (ESF’s First Year Experience Program)
“Having classes and living with the people in my learning community allowed me to get to know them on a whole new level. Relationships that took four years to develop in high school took mere months on my learning community. These people are some of the best friends I will ever have.”- First Year Student
What is the ESF college experience? It’s more than books, lectures, and living in a residence hall. Learning does not happen in a vacuum, nor do the four walls of a classroom limit it.
An ESF student’s education is defined by top-notch academic experiences and rich personal development. Residential communities are one way that an integrated focus on in- and out-of-classroom learning is achieved. As a part of ESF’s first year program (Evolutions), students’ residential experiences are characterized by a living-learning environment: ESF’s Learning Community. In collaboration with Syracuse University’s Office of Residence Life, first-year ESF students live on common floors in SU Residence Halls while taking common sections of lower-division courses. This living-learning program is a great asset to our students and college. Through their involvement, students, faculty, and staff build more meaningful relationships with each other and develop a deeper sense of pride in the community. ESF’s Evolutions Program of which the living learning: ESF Learning Community is a part, establishes an academic and social integration, and creates a positive environment where students are able to build community among their peers and develop a sense of independence.
