"My community service experience, thru the learning community, bridged my in class academic experience with a sense of civic responsibility."
ESF Learning Community member
ESF Learning Community students have chosen to participate in a variety of community service projects throughout the year, including Habitat for Humanity, Make-A-Wish Foundation of CNY, the Campus Day of Service, and working with our Earth Week Committee to coordinate a community clean up in an area park.
In the spring, the momentum of the learning communities continues as students engage in community service projects. The communities define and organize activities that empower students to employ the personal and academic skills they gained during the fall semester.
Through this experience, students will be better prepared to think creatively, systematically, and solve problems; skills that will be expected and embraced as students progress through ESF. The learning community program has been a great asset to our students and our college. Through their
involvement, students, faculty, and staff build more meaningful relationships with each other and develop a deeper sense of pride in our community.
In the fall semester, community service is a main focus for those involved in the “Students in Action” learning community. Students collaborate to define community service projects that will involve the support and aid from their peers at ESF as well as others living in their residence hall. Students have the opportunity to organize projects such as toy drives, charity walks, beautification projects, educational workshops for local children, etc. Students in this learning community are encouraged to seek support and engagement for these projects from other ESF students and residents that live on campus. In addition, speakers from the local community come and talk with the residents on a variety of topics such as civic engagement, Syracuse demographics and defined needs, and community agency connections.
