Each fall, over 20 service projects are planned specifically for first-year students through the ESF Learning Community. First-year students must complete at least one of these projects, which provide our new students with the opportunity to get off-campus and learn more about their new community using skills and knowledge gained during the first few months at ESF.
Projects are planned that coordinate with varying fields of study and personal interests. Those include chemistry demonstrations to youth, sorting donations for the Rescue Mission, helping Beaver Lake Nature Center with their annual "Enchanted Beaver Lake" event, park cleanups, invasive species removal, serving food to the hungry, and many other types of projects.
Through this experience, students are better prepared to think creatively, systematically, and solve problems; skills that will be expected and embraced as students progress through ESF. The Learning Community program has been a great asset to our students and our college. Through their involvement, students, faculty, and staff build more meaningful relationships with each other and develop a deeper sense of pride in our community.
"My community service experience, thru the learning community, bridged my in class academic experience with a sense of civic responsibility."
