Additionally they strive to build grassroots organizations that will improve the health, well-being and political strength of our communities.

Asian Pacific Islander Organization USDA (APIO) www.apio.orgAPIO aims provide leadership to achieve full participation in all USDA programs and services; that individuals and their neighbors work together as effective and willing stewards of natural resources in their communities. AIPO seeks healthy and productive land that sustains food and fiber production, sustains functioning watersheds and natural systems, enhances the environment, and improves urban and rural landscapes. It desires utilization of a diverse workforce, which will serve to better understand the needs of the APA community.

Council of Energy Resource Tribes (CERT) www.certredearth.comCERT was founded by Indian Tribes out of necessity and out of a profound sense of collective self-confidence; the confidence that they could chart a new course of prudent development that would address Tribal priorities and values while contributing to a more secure energy future for all Americans.

Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) www.ienearth.org Established in 1990 within the United States, IEN was formed by grassroots Indigenous peoples and individuals to address environmental and economic justice issues. IEN's activities include building the capacity of Indigenous communities and tribal governments to develop mechanisms to protect our sacred sites, land, water, air, natural resources, health of both our people and all living things, and to build economically sustainable communities.

Interim National Black Environmental & Economic Justice Coordinating Committee (INBEEJCC) www.ejrc.cau.eduINBEEJCC seeks to assist, support, train, and educate people of color, students, professionals, and grassroots community leaders with the goal of facilitating their inclusion into the mainstream of environmental decision-making.

Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) http://www4.nau.edu/itep/ ITEP was established in 1992 with a vision to assist Indian Tribes in the management of their environmental resources through effective training and education programs.

Minority Environmental Leadership Development Initiative (MELDI) www.umich.edu/~meldi/ Though the number of minorities in the population has been rising steadily, relatively few minorities are hired in a professional capacity in the environmental field. A number of factors may account for this. MELDI believes that career and leadership development is an important factor that can enhance the status of minorities in the environmental field.

Issues covered include the full range of health and human services issues, including environmental health.

National Tribal Environmental Council (NTEC) www.ntec.org NTEC is a membership organization dedicated to working with and assisting tribes in the protection and preservation of the reservation environment. Its mission is to enhance each tribe's ability to protect, preserve and promote the wise management of air, land and water for the benefit of current and future generations.

Minority Environmental Lawyers Association (MELA) www.concentric.net/~Mstanisl/ is not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting equity in the practice and application of environmental law. MELA's diverse membership includes African, Asian, Latino and Native-Americans. MELA's activities include promoting diversity in the hiring of environmental professionals and advocacy for the achievement of environmental justice.

Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) www.manrrs.org/ is a non-profit organization. The members of this society pledge to support endeavors that will always foster and promote the agricultural sciences and related fields in a positive manner among ethnic minorities. They also pledge to initiate and participate in activities and programs that will ensure that ethnic minorities will also be involved in and associated with the agricultural sciences and related fields. They pledge to work for the inclusion, achievement, and advancement of all people in the agricultural sciences.

American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) www.aises.org A national, nonprofit organization which nurtures building of community by bridging science and technology with traditional Native values. Through its educational programs, AISES provides opportunities for American Indians and Native Alaskans to pursue studies in science, engineering, and technology arenas. The trained professionals then become technologically informed leaders within the Indian community. AISES' ultimate goal is to be a catalyst for the advancement of American Indians and Native Alaskans as they seek to become self-reliant and self-determined members of society.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Board on Minorities and Women www.asme.org ASME is dedicated to presenting information about programs and issues related to increasing the participation of women and underrepresented minority groups in ASME and making the ASME a welcome home for all engineers.

Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP) www.aaip.com AAIP is dedicated to pursuing excellence in Native American health care by promoting education in the medical disciplines, honoring traditional healing practices and restoring the balance of mind, body, and spirit. AAIP members are very active in medical education, cross-cultural training between western and traditional medicine, and assisting Indian communities.

Center for the Advancement of Hispanics in Science and Engineering Education (CAHSEE) www.cahsee.org CAHSEE is a national educational and scientific non-profit organization based in Washington DC created by Latino scientists and engineers. Their mission is to prepare talented Hispanic and other underrepresented minority science and engineering students achieve academic excellence and professional success through CAHSEE's pipeline of rigorous educational and leadership development programs.

International Society of African Scientists (ISAS) www.africa.upenn.edu/Org_Institutes/Menu_ISAS.html ISAS promotes the advancement of science and technology among peoples of African descent. It provides a medium through which scientists and engineers can channel their skills to solve technical problems facing Africa and the Caribbean.
