Decode Computing Your IDs, Online Portals and Email

It can be confusing at first to make sense of the ESF's online resources. Here's what you need to know as simply as we can put it.

You Have 2 Different IDs

This is the 9-digit number that will be on your school ID Card. Example:

(Ignore any hyphen or additional number that follows these 9 numbers)

You need your SUID to activate your NetID.

The SUID number is your most important personal identifier. You will need it for a variety of forms, online and off.

The SUID number is not part of any lasting log-in credential (username and password).

Your ID card, however, is essential for access to facilities and services. Always carry it.

Your NetID is left of the @ in your student email:

Example: If email address is, NetID is azsmith

Use your NetID...

  • to log in to MyESF
  • to log on to campus computers
  • as your MySlice password

NetID Activation and Information

  • Activate your NetID (your NetID will be usable at ESF approximately 24 hours after activation)

Two Passwords?

ESF Password

NetID Password

For email, public/lab PC login

Your NetID is the username for MyESF, email, public/lab PCs, and MySlice, but the passwords can be different. If you use the same password when you set up your accounts, you will only have one to remember.

The starter ESF password for NetID is the last 5 numbers of your SUID plus an exclamation point.

Example: If SUID is 12345-6789, initial password is: 56789!

When you activate your NetID, you can create your own long-term password.

You Will Use 2 Different Online Portals

MyESF Portal

The MyESF portal is where you find...

  • curriculum plan sheets (including first semester courses for which you are pre-registered)
  • grade reports
  • FERPA waiver (manage who sees your information)
  • personal financial aid details
  • meal plan and housing information
  • emergency contact information (you should add or modify if needed)

Log in with your NetID (username) and the password you create.

MySlice Portal

The SU MySlice portal is where you...

  • find and register for classes — NOTE: all new students are fully pre-registered for the first semester at ESF and schedules should be viewed on MyESF
  • make changes to your course schedule — add and drop courses
  • obtain a parking permit (off-campus students)

Log in with your NetID (username) and the password you create.

Your College Email

Your student email will have an email account. The part to the left of the @ symbol is also your NetID. You will not have an email.

Your e-mail password is your NetID password (not your SUID Number). If you have forgotten your NetID password, you can reset it here.

The reason ESF students have an email relates to ESF's information technology partnership with Syracuse University.
