About the Program
The governor of New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo, has recently announced the launch of a program called the "New York Stands with Puerto Rico Recovery and Rebuilding Initiative". In partnership with the SUNY Puerto Rico task force, the Governor is asking for SUNY and CUNY students to participate in a service learning project in Puerto Rico to help rebuild after the devastating hurricane season last year. This program will have 4 different two-week sessions spanning from June - August and will be run through different SUNY schools. Please check the dates at the bottom of this page to learn about all session dates.
Please note that this program is a hands-on extensive service learning project. Students should expect this program will require physical work in a difficult environment.
For more information regarding the Governor's Initiative, please visit here: Initiative Information
Program Information will be updated on this page when it becomes available. Please contact the Office of International Education at firstname.lastname@example.org for additional questions.
The program will be run in sponsorship with All Hands and Hearts, who will work to provide lodging, food, and coordination of all service work at no cost to the students. Their may be other possible organizations involved in running this program.
Costs and Expenses
The Governor's team has also indicated that there will be support available to cover most of the student costs, and SUNY System will provide scholarships to students for tuition costs.
Please note that although the Governor is dedicated to covering most student costs (flight from JFK, housing, some meals, local transportation), students should expect that this program may require some financial costs such as some meals, personal expenses etc. More information will be provided as soon as it is available.
The flights for this program will depart and return from JFK. Students are responsible for getting themselves to/from JFK and this cost will NOT be covered.
