Call for Nominations
The ESF Women's Caucus
requests recommendations (from individuals, organizations, and departments)
for speakers for this year and beyond.
Since its inception in 1999, this series has introduced prominent
scientists, engineers, and environmental professionals (http://www.esf.edu/womenscaucus/pastspeakers.htm)
to the entire campus community. Speakers have discussed their research
projects and on broader, more global issues related to their careers. Each
slate has represented a diverse mix of backgrounds and affiliations to
appeal to the broad spectrum of interests at ESF. Past speakers have
been ESF alumnae, previous co-workers or mentors of our faculty, and ongoing
role models from academia, NGOs, industry, and governmental organizations.
In addition to the campus-wide seminar, speakers meet with classes,
individual undergraduate and graduate students, and discuss potential or
ongoing research projects with faculty and staff. Students from the
associated graduate seminar are charged with coordinating meetings during
each speaker's stay. Lectures may serve in multiple speaker series, allowing
full schedules for each, but reducing scheduling conflicts between
events. Shared speakers are also great ways to stretch those shrinking
budgets.
Please send the name, affiliation, field of
expertise, how you know her (i.e., worked with, reputation, met at
conference, etc), why she would be a good choice, and means to contact the
potential speaker to Heather Engelman,
engelman@syr.edu. The more information that you provide, the easier it
is for us to see how your speaker might fit into the schedule. We also
ask: Can your organization or department contribute to travel expenses,
reception, or a hotel stay? Can you suggest other groups that might be
interested in co-sponsorship, or cross-listing? Please include your phone
number and e-mail in case we need additional information or clarification.
Please note that even if we cannot bring your speaker
this year, we keep all suggestions. We regularly review this file to help
round out each slate of speakers. In addition, we have used this list
to help other groups seeking to flesh out their schedules.
Thank you for your continued
support of the Women in Scientific and Environmental Professions Speaker
Series!
