The Online Graduate Certificate in Environmental Leadership: From Big Ideas to Nuts and BoltsCampus Calendar

Event Website

Wednesday, March 27, 2019
12:45 pm - 1:40 pm

Location: 240 Gateway Center

Event Description: The Graduate Certificate in Environmental Leadership is one of ESF’s two flagship online graduate certificate offerings. In 2018/2019, an average of 18 people registered for each of the three courses that make up the certificate, including 10 “new” exclusively online students. In this presentation, Paul Hirsch (the Program Lead) and Sophie Brown (an ESF MS student enrolled in the Certificate Program) will talk about the program’s layered approach to online learning, which includes lectures, “podcasts”, small-group coaching and discussion sessions, and online forums. Paul will share his perspective in what it takes to bring pre-existing courses into the online space - along with a teaching philosophy that emphasizes dialog, collaboration, and student-led inquiry. Sophie will offer a student perspective on the online learning experience, and explore the ways that students can participate in online learning as a classroom space in supported and meaningful ways.
Presented by:
Paul Hirsch, Associate Professor, Environmental Studies and Program Chair, Graduate Certificate in Environmental Leadership
Sophie Brown, MS student in Environmental Science
