Stable Isotope Analysis

How to submit samples for stable isotope analysis
(same procedure  for elemental wt%C and wt%N analyses)

1) Fill out and have signed by the PI, a Request for Sample Analysis form and send to Mark Teece, 415 Jahn.

2) Weigh out samples and standards. See instructions below ****

3) Fill in the EaSSIL Sample Submission Weights EXCEL FILE and email this form to Mark Teece

*** Weigh the appropriate amount of sample and standards into tin boats. Use the balance in Jahn 340 and watch the YouTube instructions Video prior to weighing. Help is available in the lab, so please ask before you begin.

Typical sample weights and lab stds (same weigh range for STDS):

Sample Type Weight Range (mg) Lab STD (mg)
Plant leaves for C  0.7 to 0.9 Peach Leaves
Plant leaves for N  1.0 to 1.3 Peach Leaves
Wood for C 0.5 to 1.0 Peach Leaves
Zooplankton (C & N) 0.5 to 1.0 Valine
Muscle tissue (C & N)
e.g. fish, bird
0.5 to 1.0 Valine

Soils - typically weights 3.0 to 6.0 mg

For every 6 samples submitted, you will need to weigh:

4 acetanilide stds                                   0.1 to 1.0 mg range (must span range)
2 lab stds in amounts as shown in the table above for your specific sample type
