Restoring the American Chestnut

Open Comment Period

Background and Purpose

The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is responsible for completing a Plant Pest Risk Assessment (PPRA), which is the first stage in a more lengthy review process involving multiple federal agencies. The PPRA includes an Open Comment Period, in which APHIS solicits comments from any member of the public about the (Petition for Nonregulated Status) [link to full petition, also on esf.edu/chestnut page]. These can be anything from professional research that corroborates main points in the petition, to additional questions that might need to be answered, to informal opinions about how people want to plant these trees. Please see the Messaging Guidance document for more details about how to leave an effective comment.
